The ADNET autonomous delivery network is a technical solution to transport medical samples and quarantine materials in cities. It uses an RA3 drone, unmanned vehicle RG1 and RH1 hub station to deliver medical supplies without relying on manpower, alleviating time spent in traffic and the cost of traditional delivery. Supplies retrieved by the RG1 vehicle are delivered to the RH1 hub for sorting and redirecting, while the drone transfers the supplies between hubs. The RG1 then delivers goods on the receiving end. The system was demonstrated during China’s COVID-19 epidemic prevention and control period, reducing contact between samples and personnel.

The parachute safety solution manufacturer Drone Rescue Systems GmbH is supporting the European research project FALCon, the “Formation flight for in-Air Launcher 1st stage Capturing demonstration.”

Under the leadership of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR), research is being conducted on how launch vehicles can be returned to the launch site as efficiently as possible for re-use.

The aim of FALCon is to achieve cost-efficient and environmentally friendly satellite transport. The focus of the project lies on the return of rocket stages after launch. To be able to reuse these stages, efforts are being made to recapture them in the air using a “rocket catcher.”

For the next three years (March 2019 to February 2022) the focus will be on the development and flight demonstration of a technical solution for this idea. While still in the air, rocket stages are to be captured by a transport aircraft over the sea and pulled into the vicinity of the landing site. There, the stages are to land independently.

“We are proud to be part of the FALCon research project together with five international partners and DLR as part of HORIZON2020 (EC grant 821953), the EU’s largest research and innovation program to date. The capture and towing of rocket stages in flight, that is, an autonomous and safe landing, is a particularly interesting topic for us as a manufacturer of parachute safety solutions,” said Andreas Ploier, CEO of Drone Rescue Systems GmbH.

The research project has already carried out initial flight experiments with unmanned small aircraft.

    Photo: Lidar USA

Lidar USA is now offering the option of the Drone Rescue Systems parachute system with all of its DJI M600 UAVs.

As UAVs become increasingly common for mapping applications, the likelihood of a crash increases. The number-one concern for any pilot should be the safety of all people in the vicinity. Equipment safety is number two.

Any mapping-equipped drone will have enough weight to potentially harm a person even if falling from a low altitude flight. The Drone Rescue System greatly mitigates this danger and gives pilots the added assurance that, should the system fail, they have gone the extra mile to prevent harm to any bystanders.

Effective as low as 10 meters with a descent of 3 meters per second, the equipment will land without a hard impact yet quickly enough to keep from being dragged far away.

    Photo: LiDARUSA
    Photo: Lidar USA

Weighing in at 430 grams in a repackable canister 160 x 75 millimeters in size, the DRS-M600 is designed to auto-release using a patented, airplane-friendly ejection mechanism within milliseconds of detecting a system failure. The size and weight are a major bonus when combined with the airplane-friendly feature, especially for field workers, according to the company.

“We performed our own tests of the Drone Rescue system to ensure the system really worked as advertised,” said Daniel Fagerman, CTO of Lidar USA. “We weren’t disappointed. While it’s an expensive test if it fails, the good news is it that the system worked as well as could be expected. The M600 incurred very little damage that was easily repaired. We feel confident this will be more than just an accessory for our clients but rather a necessity.”

Lidar USA is offering the parachute option to any M600 owners. Watch a video of one of the company’s test flights.
