    Geotab wins contract for fleet telematics in U.S. Air Force vehicles

    The U.S. Air Force will equip its 21,000 general-purpose vehicles with Geotab fleet-management technology after the company was awarded a sole-source contract.

    Geotab received FIPS 140-2 validation for its cryptographic library in February 2019 as well as FedRAMP authorization and ISO 27001 certification for its telematics platform. These compliance certifications and authorizations validate Geotab’s system and organizational processes, enabling the company to offer its fleet-management services to all levels of federal, state and local government agencies.

    Geotab’s fleet-management technology for the Air Force is secure and customized. It includes the following features to help the service more effectively manage its vehicles:

    • automated odometer capturing
    • engine diagnostics
    • problem predictive analytics
    • fuel data
    • custom reporting
    • GHG reduction dashboards
    • fleet right-sizing reporting

    Selected for its integration capacity and proven commitment to information security, the sole-source award from the Department of the Air Force yields an Authorization to Operate (ATO) within the Department of Defense (DoD). The authorization will allow other DoD agencies to leverage Geotab services by piggybacking off of this DAF ATO.

    Geotab fleet-management products are used by more than 2,000 government agencies and departments at all levels to capture, measure and analyze crucial fleet data with deep granularity. “Winning this sole-source contract from the Department of the Air Force further solidifies Geotab’s ability to collaborate with agencies that operate at the highest levels of national data security and to provide a customized and highly secured telematics solution,” said Dan Zdarko, business development manager, federal government, Geotab.

    “It is vitally important that the technology we deploy in our fleets meet the highest standards of data security put forth by the U.S. government,” said Tim Patterson, program management flight chief from the U.S. Air Force’s 441st Vehicle Support Chain Operations Squadron at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia. “Our objective is to enhance fleet-management strategies and reduce the total cost of ownership longer term across the Department of the Air Force.”

    U-blox and Arvento Mobile Systems are launching the imt.x1 vehicle tracking system. The companies previously partnered on the Treyki Mini tracker.

    Arvento’s imt.x1 has a six-axis gyro sensor that can sense three-dimensional movement caused by emergency acceleration, panic braking and directional yaw and drift.

    With connectivity options including dual CANBus and Bluetooth, the system is also eCall compatible and captures and provides data for accident analysis and other vehicle tracking functions. The system also uses the next-generation powerful Arm-based microcontroller.

    This latest launch is yet another product of a successful, eight-year strategic partnership between Arvento and u-blox. “U-blox is more than a supplier,” said Özer Hıncal, Arvento’s general manager. “As a global leader in the IoT [internet of things] industry providing high-performance IoT modules, platforms and support services, u-blox is our trusted solutions partner, working closely with us to address customer demands and issues.”

    As for previous Arvento products, collaboration with u-blox was a key factor in the imt.x1 product development process. The system’s high position sensitivity and accuracy are based on integration of u-blox’s 2G, 4G and 5G-ready cellular modules as well as GNSS modules.

    The development of the imt.x1 aligns with Arvento’s vision and mission as a developer of advanced fleet telematics and vehicle tracking devices and will be available from August 2019.

  • Azuga Takes on Distracted Driving for Fleet Managers

     

    To recognize National Safety Month and to highlight the growing dangers of distracted and reckless driving, Azuga has published a Fleet Stats infographic showing the dangers of auto accidents its fleet tracking programs are designed to prevent.

    Of the 41,000 Americans killed each year in traffic accidents, nearly 5,000 die as a result of crashes involving large fleet trucks. An additional 13,000 die as a result of a speeding-related accidents. Azuga offers two programs for fleet managers: SpeedSafe and DriveSafe.

    The programs combine GPS, a driver behavior and rewards system, vehicle health reports, and plug-and-play installation to combat reckless and distracted driving. DriveSafe prevents talking and texting when the vehicle is in motion. The distracted driving technology locks down a driver’s screen and only allows phone numbers that the employer’s policy allows. Policies can be applied at the individual driver level to allow certain calls and texts (for instance, allow incoming calls from home, the office, and school.)

    With SpeedSafe, a fleet manager controls speeding on residential streets, in school zones, and in adverse weather conditions. Going beyond simple control, a fleet manager also gets reporting and analytical tools to help quickly identify problem areas and track and train drivers over time.

    National Safety Month is sponsored by the National Safety Council. According to distraction.gov, using a mobile device while driving causes an estimated 28 percent of traffic accidents. Further, the National Safety Council estimates $40 billion cost to United States citizens each year.

    Azuga says its customers have been able to decrease the number of speeding events by 40 percent and decrease overall liability, which translates into an average 15 percent savings on insurance premiums.
