    Spirent launches PNT Xe to expand GNSS testing access

    Spirent Communications, now part of Keysight Technologies, announced PNT Xe, a GNSS simulation platform designed to expand high-performance GNSS testing across the development lifecycle. The platform aims to reduce barriers to positioning, navigation and timing testing by offering simulation capabilities in what the company describes as an economical, multipurpose platform.

    The company said PNT Xe addresses challenges manufacturers face in validating GNSS performance during accelerated development schedules. The platform’s hardware supports testing from early prototypes through production line verification for commercial and military applications.

    “Until now, many organizations have been forced to use unreliable, inconsistent simulators or utilize ‘live sky’ signals as a way of conducting production testing,” said Peter Terry-Brown, divisional CEO of Spirent’s positioning business. He said PNT Xe makes the company’s simulation technology available for workstations, engineers and project phases.

    Terry-Brown said the platform allows developers, integrators, design verification teams and production line testers to use consistent test methodology without compromising results validity. Many leading GNSS chipsets and modules are developed using Spirent’s simulators, he said.

    The compact PNT Xe can be rack or desk mounted and features an interface designed to accelerate scenario creation. The platform can operate in lab or field environments and withstand variations in temperature and vibration while maintaining performance, according to the company. It supports all GNSS constellations and frequencies and includes AES M-Code access and a removable system disk for secure testing environments.

    Rob VanBrunt, CEO of Spirent Federal Systems, called PNT Xe “a game-changer for defense customers.” He said the platform’s ease of use will help deploy new PNT technology faster, allowing software engineers to test code changes at their desks. Authorized GPS M-Code users can conduct unclassified military signal testing using AES M-Code without relying solely on secure labs, he said.

    Marie Hattar, chief marketing officer at Keysight Technologies, said accurate, high-performance simulation becomes critical as positioning and timing technologies become foundational to 6G, defense systems and autonomous vehicles. PNT Xe makes that capability available to more innovators to validate performance, reliability and resilience at every development stage, she said.

    Built on Spirent’s 40 years of expertise, PNT Xe is designed for development and production environments including low-altitude drones, vehicles, space applications, automotive, defense, and consumer devices.

    Syntony GNSS has partnered with Keysight Technologies, an RF testing solutions manufacturer, to advance GNSS testing and simulation capabilities.

    The collaboration centers on Keysight’s VXG advanced signal generator, which can generate thousands of simultaneous signals across all GNSS constellations and bands. It features time and phase synchronization for high fidelity and accuracy in simulation scenarios. This feature is particularly crucial for testing GNSS receivers under various conditions to ensure optimal performance in real-world scenarios.

    The Syntony GNSS Simulator Constellator can mimic the complex dynamics of GNSS signals, providing a platform for testing and validating GNSS receivers. When combined with Keysight’s VXG, it serves as a comprehensive testing solution for all GNSS signals and scenarios.

    The partnership aims to improve Controlled Reception Pattern Antenna (CRPA) testing. CRPA is pivotal in enhancing the resilience of GNSS receivers against interference and jamming to offer reliable operation even in adverse conditions. The combined solution from Syntony GNSS and Keysight offers a platform for testing CRPA systems to ensure they meet the stringent requirements of modern applications.

    Telecommunications, among other sectors, relies heavily on precise timing information, typically derived from GNSS signals. The threat of jamming attacks, which can disrupt GPS time synchronization, poses a significant risk, potentially crippling communications and other dependent systems. The testing solutions emerging from this partnership provide a toolset for infrastructure managers to evaluate and enhance the resilience of their systems against such threats.

    Keysight Technologies has outbid VIAVI Solutions for the acquisition of Spirent Communications, according to Bloomberg News. 

    The deal proposed by Keysight values Spirent at 201.5 pence per share, inclusive of a 2.5 pence special dividend, leading to an equity valuation of $1.46 billion, based on information from Keysight and Spirent.  

    Following the announcement, Spirent Communications’ stock witnessed an approximate 11% increase, reaching 198.6 pence per share on the London Stock Exchange. 

    The intent to purchase comes after VIAVI Solutions extended an all-cash proposal in March 2024 to acquire Spirent for about $1.3 billion. In response to Keysight’s offer, Spirent’s board has retracted their earlier endorsement of VIAVI’s bid. 

    The successful completion of Keysight’s acquisition hinges on the acceptance of the offer by investors with at least 75% of the voting rights, in addition to obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals.

    Keysight Technologies Inc. has gained Global Certification Forum (GCF) validation of a 5G location-based services (LBS) assisted-Galileo (A-Galileo) test case by combining 5G new radio (NR) and GNSS technology.

    The achievement will accelerate implementation of LBS in smartphones by enabling mobile phone vendors to verify that designs comply to the latest 3GPP specifications that support accurate location positioning in a wide range of sectors.

    Sectors include healthcare, road and aerial transportation, emergency and rescue services, public safety, and homeland security.  Highly precise positioning services also enable mobile operators to deliver personalized services supporting entertainment, hospitality and retail applications.

    LBS leverages different technologies, including GNSS, beamforming and round-trip time to geographically locate a user. LBS test cases allow users to verify sensitivity, accuracy and dynamic range in mobile phones that leverage GNSS constellations to identify precise geographic location.

    GCF conformance agreement group meeting #72, held Oct. 21, confirmed the validation of the first 5G LBS A-Galileo test case, which was supported by Keysight’s S8705A RF/RRM DVT and Conformance Toolset. The toolset provides access to a wide range of radio frequency, radio resource management, and development validation test cases used to verify 5G NR designs in both non-standalone and standalone deployment modes.

    The S8705A toolset uses the E7515B UXM 5G Wireless Test Platform, a compact signaling test platform with multi-format stack support, rich processing power and abundant RF resources for emulating various mobility scenarios in a 5G network as well as a recommended GNSS emulator to deliver the LBS test case.

    Keysight Technologies Inc. is collaborating with DEKRA to ensure that chipset and device vendors can validate E112 caller location (universal European emergency number) functionality in compliance to a new European Union (EU) regulation.

    The collaboration leverages GNSS and c (LBS) to verify E112 regulatory test cases used to validate mobile phones sold into the European market. The new regulation supports emergency services across the European Union by reducing response times from rescue services to save more lives.

    “Keysight is pleased to expand the company’s collaboration with DEKRA,” said Muthu Kumaran, general manager of Keysight’s Device Validation Solutions business. “With Keysight’s test solutions, DEKRA supports a global ecosystem of smartphone vendors by validating that their products are in compliance to the new regulation, newly created to improve emergency services’ ability to locate individuals in need of assistance from the fire brigade, medical teams or the police.”

    Keysight’s network emulation solutions enable DEKRA to validate E112-related test cases regulated by an EU-issued guideline document to assist notified bodies in the assessment of E112 compliance. The new EU regulation (Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/320) went into effect on March 17, 2022. It mandates that all new mobile phones sold in the EU need to support GNSS technology based on the Galileo constellation, advanced mobile location (AML) protocol and Wi-Fi communications technology. As a result, emergency response call centers can accurately pinpoint the caller’s location.

    “DEKRA is founded on the principles of safeguarding human interaction with technology and environment,” said Juan Carlos Mora, vice president, Business Line Connectivity of Service Division, Product Testing at DEKRA. “This is why we are pleased to extend our collaboration with Keysight, which offers DEKRA the regulatory device test solutions needed to quickly and confidently validate E112 caller location functionality per the EU’s latest mandatory requirements.”

    Keysight’s device test solutions for regulatory and conformance validation are based on common hardware and software platforms for comprehensive test-case coverage. Keysight’s LBS solutions also support assisted GNSS (A-GNSS) test functionality. This enables users to comprehensively address 5G new radio (NR) conformance requirements mandated by the Global Certification Forum (GCF) and PTCRB, an organization comprised of North American mobile operators.

    DEKRA uses Keysight’s RF/RRM DVT & Conformance ToolsetRF Automation Toolset and Wireless IoT Regulatory Test Solution to address 5G and internet of things (IoT) device regulatory requirements and SA8700A C-V2X Test Solution to certify cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) devices.
