    TerraGo Edge version 4 uses iOS, Android flexibility

    The profession of land surveying has taken advantage of many technological location and measuring advancements, yet most of the data collectors used today are still based upon aging proprietary data collectors and even older operating system platforms.

    A common tool for most surveyors is the smartphone or tablet, so TerraGo developed an application that takes advantage of the nimble programming of iOS and Android.

    The TerraGo Edge 4 mapping application utilizes all the best features of today’s mobile technology, according to TerraGo. Besides an intuitive interface, Edge 4 allows users to customize how their data is collected and presented, including overlays on Google and Apple maps.

    Depending on the user’s needs, Edge 4 can use the device’s Bluetooth connection to an external GNSS receiver for greater accuracy.

    Sharing is also easy with publishing and ArcGIS exporting plug-ins, all in a mobile environment most users are familiar with using every day, the company said.

    GPS and GIS features include:

    • Sub-meter and centimeter precision

    • Full NMEA GPS metadata display and capture
    • GPS accuracy settings
    • RTK support

    TerraGo Edge version 4.0 offers a completely redesigned app based on customer feedback, field user observations and task-centered design cycles, as well as a host of new features including the addition of Google and Apple basemaps.

    TerraGo Edge’s latest features include:

    • Reimagined user experience: Rebuild of the Edge mobile user interface incorporating both years of user feedback from the field and interactive design cycles with live users.
    • Google and Apple maps: Standard, satellite and hybrid maps are available for data collection and are paired with new precise location pin icons for a cutting edge data collection experience.
    • Tabbed app navigation: With the new, easier to reach tabbed navigation, it’s easier to collect data in the field.
    • Quick capture button: Allows users to create notes, complete forms, take photos, drop points and draw lines/polygons from virtually anywhere in the app, with only one tap.
    • Unlimited attachments: Now users can attach as many forms, photos or videos as you would like to a single note.
    • Responsive split screen view: When holding a tablet or larger mobile device in landscape mode, new split screens will automatically allow userse to view lists/maps or lists/details on one screen.
    • Detailed list view: The new detailed list view shows more of the important note data making it easier to find notes, and enables one-tap actions directly from the list.
    • One-tap forms and maps lists: Now users can view all the form templates, and instantly create notes using them, or view all your offline maps and directly access them, from one master list.
    • Precise location: Users can capture a more accurate location when creating notes by using the center crosshair target and coordinate level accuracy for dropping points and drawing lines/polygons.
    • Filter by map extent: This new feature keeps the notes on a map and in a list dynamically in sync.
    • Quick basemap preview: Preview online and offline basemaps in real-time from the selection screen to choose a map with one tap and no toggling back and forth.
    • Arc2Edge plug-in: ArcGIS Desktop users can directly share maps and features with mobile users, allowing them to roundtrip updates and new features from the field back to ArcGIS.
  • TerraGo Edge and GeoPDF demonstrated at Intergeo

    TerraGo demonstrated at Intergeo the latest capabilities of its line of GeoPDF products as well as survey-grade, mobile GPS and GIS data collection with its TerraGo Edge and TerraGo Magic platforms geospatial collaboration and mobility software.

    GeoPDF products enable free, lightweight GIS applications, helping organizations get more value from their current investments in GIS and imagery platforms.

    TerraGo Edge and TerraGo Magic are GPS data collection devices combining high-accuracy, survey-grade GPS with advanced mapping and mobile collaboration on Android and iOS devices. With TerraGo Magic, customers and partners can build their own mobile apps, fully customized with their branding and features, without coding.

    TerraGo Edge v3.9.6 includes sample code for all REST API end points, automated note name options, enhanced cloud-based publishing of maps and forms and high-volume imagery and map to mobile processing. It includes:

    • New tools to support ArcGIS and enterprise integration: ArcGIS and enterprise integration using the TerraGo Edge REST API with the addition of sample code for every Edge REST endpoint via Postman API utility.
    • Automated note names with custom form fields: Configure the one-click QuickNote in any notebook to name notes by a specific form field, enabling  speed in the field and user-friendly data management and searching.
    • Attach maps and forms to multiple notebooks simultaneously.
    • Import multiple GeoPDFs and GeoTIFFs at the same time: Select or drag & drop many GeoPDFs/GeoTIFFs at the same time for user-friendly, high-volume parallel processing of  aerial imagery or offline basemaps.
    • New media filenames to help associate media to projects, includingnotebook name, note name, and a time and date stamp, to identify, search and sort  media files.

    GeoPDF. The latest Version 7 of TerraGo GeoPDF includes tools for publishing GeoPDF, including TerraGo Publisher for ArcGIS, TerraGo Publisher for ArcGIS Server, TerraGo Composer, TerraGo GeoPDF Platform Toolkit, TerraGo Publisher for Raster and TerraGo Toolbar.

    Features in this release include:

    • PubPy: Extends and enhances integration into ArcGIS ArcPy to enable on-demand web services and GIS portals.
    • OpenGeoPDF: Adds Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) GeoPackage to GeoPDF documents to enable GIS-Lite applications using TerraGo Toolbar Version 7.0.
    • Mobile: Extends and enhances its support of TerraGo Edge and private-label apps created from TerraGo Magic with capabilities to create notebooks, maps, and applications for mobile workflows.
    • Advanced Layer Control: Implements of a number of features to improve flexibility and ease of use in production contexts.
    • Remote Desktop: Enables end users to access TerraGo Publisher and TerraGo Composer on their desktop from remote location.
    • Compatibility: Supports the latest versions of ArcGIS including the recently released ArcGIS 10.4.1.
    • Licensing: Implements a new license management system to  reduce the complexity and burden of license management, especially in enterprise software management.

    TerraGo Edge 3.9.5 is now out. The new version offers a number of new, powerful features for iOS, Android and web users, the company announced.

    TerraGo Edge enables users to import and export OGC GeoPackage as a SQLite database optimized for performance on iOS and Android devices.

    TerraGo and Eos Positioning Systems have entered a collaboration to combine the TerraGo Edge mobile GPS data-collection platform with the Eos Arrow line of sub-meter and centimeter accuracy receivers. The combination delivers a modern, cloud-based, real-time data collection capability, according to a TerraGo press release.

    While the working environments and the projects are very different, customers in for water utilities, energy, survey and engineering are using TerraGo Edge and Eos Arrow receivers to replace traditional GPS handhelds for cost-savings and improved productivity.

    Enmapp, a pipeline inspection company based in Canada, was able to cut hardware costs by 85 percent while capturing sub-meter data in real-time, eliminating all the costs of post-processing handheld data.

    Summit Engineering, a Colorado-based engineering and land surveying firm, was able to reduce hardware costs by over 50 percent and improve productivity by more than 30 percent while surveying power lines in Minnesota for one of the country’s largest energy companies. Similar performance improvements and cost reductions are reported by joint customers in water utilities, forestry, engineering, agriculture and environmental operations, TerraGo said.

    “When we talk about Eos Arrow, we’re not simply pairing their receivers via Bluetooth, there are millions of apps that do that without any meaningful integration,” said Dave Basil, VP of products and services at TerraGo. “We interoperate with their receivers at the software level to ensure our customers get the full real-time GPS data set so they can monitor, alert and capture data that meets the highest accuracy and quality standards. For customers, it’s as simple as Bluetooth pairing, but we’ve done the work to turn their phone or tablet into a survey-grade receiver.”

    “TerraGo and Eos Positioning are strategic technology partners,” said Jean-Yves Lauture, chief technology officer of Eos Positioning Systems. “This means that our collaboration goes beyond simple marketing and includes sharing core technology for the benefit of our customers. For example, we have been able to share Eos software components, which TerraGo has built into the Edge app. This integration provides the full fidelity monitor and lossless capture of NMEA data from the Eos receivers, including the Arrow 200.”

  • Water utility deploys TerraGo Edge to improve service

    The City of Sebring, Florida, has deployed TerraGo Edge for utility asset inspection and management. According to a TerraGo press release, using its software has enabled the city to cut costs, bring surveys in-house and improve response times for repairs.

    Like thousands of water utilities across the United States, the City of Sebring Utilities Department is tasked with providing a safe and reliable water supply, while managing all the dispersed assets of the water distribution and wastewater systems. To do this, Sebring needs to constantly locate, map and inspect the assets to maintain service levels and operations.

    To avoid the high cost of traditional GPS technology and services, Sebring researched mobile products to see if other organizations had field success using iPads and iPhones to do the work. They found TerraGo Edge could deliver custom forms, CAD diagrams and survey-grade accuracy.

    “The deployment of TerraGo Edge saved the City of Sebring the expense of a traditional GIS and GPS solution, as well as the cost of surveying services, which could have run over $300,000,” said Mark Kretz, Water Plant Operations. “On a day-to-day basis, the biggest benefit is that we get the ease of use of an iPad, and didn’t have to buy and utilize proprietary GPS handhelds, which are more complex and vastly more expensive.”

    Enmapp, a pipeline services company based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, has replaced its proprietary GPS handhelds with TerraGo Edge and Eos Arrow receivers. TerraGo Edge is a mobile GPS data collection platform that integrates with the Eos Arrow series of GNSS receivers to bring advanced sub-meter and centimeter real-time accuracy to any smartphone or tablet.

    Enmapp provides data collection services to energy companies for pipeline construction and maintenance. Before TerraGo Edge, Enmapp relied on all-in-one GPS handheld devices, but became convinced the cost, features and performance were increasingly out of line with the mobile revolution fueled by Apple and Android solutions. After an extensive evaluation, Enmapp selected TerraGo Edge and Eos Arrow 100 receiver for a field trial so they could compare their performance against the GPS handhelds.

    After downloading the app on the crew’s iPads and pairing the Eos Arrow 100 via Bluetooth, they were up and running within minutes. “The results were astounding,” reads a TerraGo press release. “Not only did the Eos GPS receiver meet the GPS handheld’s accuracy requirements, in some cases it was much better. The efficiency of the crews was far superior with the native iPad features of TerraGo Edge, versus the old-style stylus and PDA screens of the legacy equipment. The labor costs were also reduced because they were able to use real-time GPS from the Eos Arrow 100 and reduce post-processing. Enmapp declared TerraGo Edge and Eos the clear winner, and have now deployed TerraGo Edge on all field personnel iPads, along with a Bluetooth-connected, sub-meter GPS receiver, the Eos Arrow 100.”

    “The hardware savings are enormous with the new GPS kit at less than $10,000 compared to the old kit which was over $70,000. But the ongoing reduction of project labor costs is even more valuable over time,” said Lance Fugate, program manager at Enmapp. “The cost reductions and efficiency improvements are a game-changer for us. As our industry continues to look for innovation from its service providers, TerraGo Edge enables us to deliver more efficiently. We can pass these savings directly to our customers with each and every future project.”

    The TerraGo Edge is available for either iOS or Android.
