  • Esri and Pokévision speed Pokémon Go hunting

    Pokévision, a third-party app for the viral mobile game Pokémon Go, uses Esri’s location-based data and mapping platform ArcGIS to help players of the game find Pokémon around them.

    Pokévision helps Pokémon Go players hunt more strategically by displaying location changes and time spent in each place; the length of time in a given location depends on the rarity of the character.

    A web map powered by ArcGIS services, Pokévision shows all Pokémon near user-requested locations. When visitors type an address or drop a pin on the map, Pokémon are displayed in real time.

    “When we created Pokévision, we chose Esri ArcGIS almost immediately because it was the only option that was able to scale at the rate we were growing,” said the Pokévision founder Y. Liu. “Using Esri alleviated many of the concerns we had with scaling, and helped us to quickly and seamlessly keep pace with our growing user base.”

    Pokévision had 20 million unique users in the first five days and is growing. Its peak usage exceeded 320,000 visitors with map requests reaching into the tens of millions.

    Pokévision developers chose Esri for its open-source, mobile-friendly interactive mapping capabilities. The developers first built the locator for a few friends, but the tool was so popular it quickly went viral. Within hours of creation, Esri experienced double the normal hit rates, and use of interactive maps used to display Pokémon rose by more than 30 percent.

    “The ArcGIS Online platform is designed to scale in high-performance, high-growth environments,” said Paul Ross, product manager for ArcGIS Online at Esri. “Even large data sets at high volume can be handled in real or near real time, as happened with the Pokévision locator.”

    Developers can bring the Pokévision location to their apps using ArcGIS regardless of their experience in creating geospatial applications. Web, mobile, and desktop apps can incorporate the same mapping, visualization, and analysis that hundreds of thousands of organizations around the world rely on every day.

  • CoreLogic expands location-based intelligence with building footprints

    CoreLogic has expanded its location-based intelligence data with the addition of structure footprint information to its other parcel and property characteristics data offerings.

    CoreLogic is a global property information, analytics and data-enabled services provider. The company made the announcement at the 2016 Esri User Conference, being held in San Diego, California, June 27-July 1.

    CoreLogic Structure Footprint enables accurate roof-top geocoding and identifies the location and outline of relevant structures on a parcel, including all known sub-addresses, to provide a more granular and precise property description.

    CoreLogic residential and commercial structure footprint data covers more than 35 million rural and urban parcels throughout the U.S, including two-thirds of the largest 50 metro areas. When combined with other CoreLogic proprietary property data, including business financial health, natural hazard risks, occupancy information and building characteristics, the added structure footprint data provides a more complete picture of a property than was previously available.

    Accurate location data is a critically important factor for planning and operations in oil and gas, insurance, geo-commerce and other industries that need to understand what type of structures and building characteristics are associated with property addresses.

    The addition of structure footprint data complements the existing CoreLogic property characteristic data, which details attributes in 150 distinct categories that provide location intelligence on everything from zoning and land use to details about roof type and number of bedrooms.

    “The addition of this property data layer, which identifies individual structures within a single parcel, can improve efficiencies and risk segmentation for everything from geo-commerce to insurance,” said Steve Brewer, senior vice president of Insurance and Spatial Solutions at CoreLogic. “It’s exciting to see this level of granularity added to location intelligence that was previously not available — granularity that can be used in a variety of decision-making situations including natural hazard risk assessment, marketing, asset management and claims processing.

  • CartoDB unveils tech to extract Deep Insights from location data

    CartoDB, a world leading company for location intelligence, data analysis, and visualization, has launched Deep Insights, a technology layer that enables the visualization, dynamic filtering, and exploration of large location datasets at unprecedented scale and scope.

    With CartoDB’s Deep Insights technology, datasets can be enriched or augmented by existing geospatial data from various sources with a diverse number of fields, such as census information or administrative boundaries. Once data is processed by Deep Insights, users can further filter, pan, zoom and granularly narrow in on data to view trends and patterns that, in traditional reports, would otherwise go unnoticed.

    Deep Insights is also equipped with a suite of interactive widgets and command controls so users can tailor the interface for the best experience. It can be implemented to stand-alone or configured and integrated with users’ own application workflow.

    CartoDB is launching Deep Insights at Mobile World Congress, being held Feb. 22-25 in Barcelona, Spain. The company is demonstrating the technology in partnership with Mobile World Capital, an organization dedicated to bringing mobile transformation to the city of Barcelona. Deep Insights will be used to analyze the influx of tourism in Barcelona and identify opportunities for increased revenue through tourism per location. The collaborative project will leverage three sets of data, including data on key touristic spots, social media activity, and payments from BBVA bank.

    Deep Insights is made available through a single, user-friendly interface that allows users to explore location-related insights visually on a map. It has a fixed pricing structure to allow for unlimited scale with no cap on usage, starting at $100 for 1GB in memory data.
