Registration for AUVSI XPONENTIAL 2022 is now open. The conference will be held April 25-28 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.

ION opens registration for Pacific PNT Conference

ION’s Pacific PNT Conference is a global cooperative development of Positioning, Navigation and Timing technology and applications where policy and technical leaders from around the world meet to discuss policy updates, receive program status updates and exchange technical information.

The 2022 conference will be hosted virtually April 11-13 PDT on a complimentary basis for ION members. The conference will include sessions on policy and status updates, performance schedules and plans, plus special challenges affecting Asia-Pacific presented by an elite list of experts representing BeiDou, COSMIC/ FORMOSAT, and QZSS.

Registration open for Munich Satellite Navigation Summit
The Munich Satellite Navigation Summit program is now online and registration for the event is open. The summit will be held online March 7-8.

The Munich Satellite Navigation Summit focuses on satellite navigation in the present day and future, featuring global speakers and highlighting the latest developments in the field of GNSS. This year’s theme is “AI in GNSS – Intelligence brought to Navigation”.

ION announces award winners, fellows

The Institute of Navigation (ION) presented its annual awards during the ION International Technical Meeting (ION ITM) and Precise Time and Time Interval Systems and Applications (PTTI) meeting held Jan. 25-27 at the Hyatt Regency Long Beach in Long Beach, California.

The ION Annual Awards Program recognizes individuals making significant contributions or demonstrating outstanding performance relating to the art and science of navigation.

Jonathan “JR” Ryan received the Per Enge Early Achievement Award for developing vision-based navigation software used operationally on aircraft, UAVs and glide munitions that provides continuous high-accuracy absolute position measurements in GPS-denied environments. The Per Enge Early Achievement Award is presented in recognition of outstanding contributions made early in one’s career.

Major Matthew L. Sutton received the Superior Achievement Award for his ingenuity, dedication and leadership in ensuring critical operational test and tactics improvements for warfighters in a contested electromagnetic environment. The Superior Achievement Award is presented to recognize an individual who has demonstrated outstanding performance as a practicing navigator of any vehicle, in any medium — marine, land, air, undersea and space.

John Fischer received the Distinguished PTTI Service Award for his pioneering research, patents, and leadership that advanced resilient positioning, navigation, and timing technology; and his prominent role in increasing global awareness of PNT. The Distinguished PTTI Service Award is presented to recognize outstanding contributions related to the management of PTTI systems. Fischer is a member of the GPS World Editorial Advisory Board.

Mark L. Psiaki received the Dr. Samuel M. Burka Award for his paper “Navigation Using Carrier Doppler Shift from a LEO Constellation: TRANSIT on Steroids” published in the Fall 2021 issue of NAVIGATION: Journal of the Institute of Navigation, Vol. 68, No. 3, pp. 621-641. The Dr. Samuel M. Burka Award recognizes outstanding achievement in the preparation of a paper advancing the art and science of positioning, navigation and timing.

Satoshi Kogure received the Captain P. V. H. Weems Award for technical and programmatic leadership in the development of Japan’s Quasi-Zenith Satellite System serving the Asia-Pacific region, and for leadership in international GNSS. The Captain P. V. H. Weems Award is presented to individuals for continuing contributions to the art and science of navigation.

Dana A. Goward received the Norman P. Hays Award for inspirational leadership in the pursuit and preservation of navigational excellence, developing international support for protecting, toughening and augmenting GNSS, and for advocating policies and systems to support resilient PNT. The Norman P. Hays Award is given in recognition of outstanding encouragement, inspiration and support contributing to the advancement of navigation. Goward is a frequent contributor to GPS World magazine.

Ignacio Fernández-Hernández received the Thomas L. Thurlow Award for pioneering contributions in the design and development of GNSS authentication and high-accuracy services. The Thomas L. Thurlow Award recognizes outstanding contributions to the science of navigation.

Fellow Members Announced

ION also announced recipients of 2022 Fellow membership during the conference. Election to Fellow membership recognizes sustained professional accomplishments that have significantly contributed to the advancement of the arts and sciences of positioning, navigation and/or timing (PNT) in the areas of technology, management, practice or teaching and a demonstrated and sustained impact on the PNT community. Fellows have maintained an observable presence in the ION community over the long term, including contributions to ION programs and publications.

Dennis M. Akos was elected for fundamental contributions to the design, development and commercialization of GNSS software-defined radio technology.

Charles A. Schue, III, was elected for distinguished and sustained technical and strategic contributions, leadership and guidance in resilient PNT solutions.

Charles K. Toth was elected for significant contributions to the development and implementation of multi-sensor integrated navigation systems, and for demonstrated excellence as an academic mentor and professional leader.

Trimble Dimensions+ opens 2022 Call for Speakers

Trimble has opened its Call for Speakers for the Trimble Dimensions+ 2022 User Conference to be held November 7-9 at the Venetian Resort in Las Vegas.

The Dimensions+ User Conference will promote a variety of sessions highlighting groundbreaking technology that can be used to transform work and push for a sustainable future. Speakers will have the opportunity to share their industry experiences and insights with peers from around the globe. Registration opens for ITM/PTTI 2022 in Long Beach, California

ION’s winter meeting, the International Technical Meeting (ITM), is a more intimate conference with a technical program related to positioning, navigation and timing and includes the ION Fellows and Annual Awards presentations.

In 2022, ITM will take place in Long Beach, California, Jan. 25-27, and will be co-located with the Precise Time and Time Interval Systems and Applications Meeting. ITM will house more than 150 in-person and virtual technical presentations, two keynote addresses, six tutorials, and an exhibit hall filled with the latest PNT solutions.

A commercial exhibit and pre-conference tutorials are held in conjunction with the conference.

Tutorials will be offered as part of this year’s in-person technical program on January 26 and will be open to all in-person PTTI and ITM attendees. Tutorials cover novel systems for time distribution from space, atomic clocks, Kalman filtering for clock estimation, and specific implementations for time distribution from space.

The ITM/PTTI plenary session will be recorded and uploaded to the website for on-demand viewing. No other ITM/PTTI sessions (including tutorials) will be recorded for on-demand viewing. All presenters are required to provide a video presentation for on-demand viewing. On-demand presentations will be available through the ITM/PTTI meeting portal for 30 days.

Navigation 2021 conference to be both virtual and in person

Navigation 2021 will bring together experts from industry, research institutions, government agencies and investors whose primary goal is to work together for a more navigable world, organizers said. Conference themes will include PNT systems and technology, robust PNT, PNT applications, animal and human navigation, and navigation in society.

The November event will unite two conferences: the International Navigation Conference and the European Navigation Conference. The conference is sponsored by the Royal Institute of Navigation and the European Group of Institutes of Navigation (EUGIN). It takes place Nov. 15-18 in Edinburgh, Scotland, and virtually.

The full conference will take place online on a highly interactive platform. Organizers have also been able to include an in-person element of the conference with the primary objective of enjoying the keynotes, networking and exhibition for those who are in a position to do so.

The majority of session talks will be online only, with the option of watching back talks on the platform at a later date. Learn more about the chosen platform.

The in-person element of Navigation 2021 will take place in the EICC conference center in Edinburgh. The EICC has compiled a guide to the in-person element of the conference.

Commercial UAV Expo Europe delayed to January due to COVID-19
Organizers of Commercial UAV Expo Europe have announced that the next edition of the event will take place with Amsterdam Drone Week (ADW) and EASA High Level Conference at RAI Amsterdam Convention Center, Jan. 18-20, 2022.

Previously, the events were scheduled to take place together in December 2021, but the organizers have decided — in close consultation with partners Amsterdam Drone Week and EASA — to delay the event until early 2022 due to the impact of COVID-19 on travel and the event industry.

The new date will offer partners, speakers, visitors and delegates more certainty to travel to Amsterdam and thus bring the worldwide UAM/UAS community together. Future editions will revert to the usual December time frame.

“The benefit of co-locating the three events is in bringing the whole drone ecosystem together in one place where professionals can learn, connect and drive the industry forward,” said Lee Corkhill, group event director at Diversified Communications, organizer of Commercial UAV Expo Europe. “Commercial UAV Expo Europe is the leading international trade show and conference in Europe for the commercial drone market delivering sUAS manufacturers and end-users. Amsterdam Drone Week focuses on Urban Air Mobility and the role of cities. The EASA High Level Conference focuses on the stakeholders involved in UTM and regulatory issues.”

During ADW 2021, the EASA High Level Conference will take place on Jan. 18-19 and the Commercial UAV Expo Europe will be held on Jan. 19-20.

ADW will offer a hybrid option in January 2022, meaning content from the ADW mainstage will be broadcast daily, including matchmaking and online speed networking sessions.

In 2020, ADW organized a successful online event. “Although it was a great success given the circumstances, we prefer to see the fast-growing industry around drones and unmanned aircraft back in Amsterdam in person,” said Paul Riemens, CEO RAI Amsterdam. “Bringing people together is part of the DNA of RAI Amsterdam.”

“Innovative Air Mobility is an area of intense activity for EASA. We are steadily putting all the rules in place for these operations and working on certification for these entirely new types of aircraft,” said EASA Executive Director Patrick Ky. “The High Level Conference at ADW is an important platform for discussions with a range of stakeholders on these developments.”

EASA High Level Conference

The main theme of the EASA High Level Conference will be “UAM Becoming a Reality.” Main topics are:
- Multi-Level Governance of Urban Skies
- Integration of new entrants in Urban Airspace and overall U-space-ATM integration
- Mobility Hubs: drone and eVTOL landing sites and vertiport.

Earth Archive project aims to create digital twin of entire planet

The Earth Archive Initiative is an unprecedented scientific effort to create a digital twin of the entire surface of the Earth – and everything on it.

By scanning the planet’s land surface with very high-resolution lidar, the Earth Archive will create a true three-dimensional digital twin of our world — an open source, digital record of the Earth that will reflect the landscape exactly as it was at the time of scanning.

The geospatial data captured will serve as the baseline for understanding and exploring our world.

A virtual conference, billed as the “Chapter I : The Amazon,” takes place June 15-16, and will provide updates on the unique project from academics, non-government organizations, technology providers and the public. Registration is free.

The Amazon Basin is the first region chosen for scanning and the focus of the conference. “While our scope is the entire planet, we’ve tasked ourselves with first scanning areas that are not only most susceptible to change, but also deep in value for understanding our past,” a project spokesperson explained.

“The 2021 inaugural Earth Archive Congress is centered on our initial campaign to scan the entire Amazon Basin. The Amazon rainforest plays a monumental role in the Earth’s climate, has an incredibly rich Indigenous history, and boasts a remarkable level of ecological diversity — but is vanishing before our eyes.

“With the ability to digitally preserve landscapes at any moment in time, very high resolution lidar can enhance archaeological, anthropological, and conservation studies and provide needed information to help advance sustainable development, as well as provide us with more groundbreaking revelations of the Amazon’s astounding past.”

Registration opens for ION GNSS+ 2021 in St. Louis

The ION GNSS+ 2021 technical program is online, and registration for the event is now open. ION GNSS+ 2021 takes place Sept. 20-24 at the St. Louis Union Station Hotel in St. Louis, Missouri.

ION GNSS+ 2021: GNSS + Other Sensors in Today’s Marketplace, is the 34th International Technical Meeting of the Satellite Division of the Institute of Navigation, and the world’s largest technical meeting and showcase of GNSS and GNSS-related technology, products and services.

“It’s exciting to be meeting in-person in St. Louis,” said Lisa Beaty, ION executive director. “We are expecting a pent-up demand as the community is eager to convene and get caught up. The ION GNSS+ 2021 technical and commercial exhibit is the best opportunity of the year to see what’s been happening in PNT [positioning, navigation and timing].”

ION webinar explores GNSS interference mitigation

The Institute of Navigation (ION) is hosting a webinar April 20 on “GNSS interference mitigation: A measurement and position domain assessment.”

The webinar takes place at 11 a.m. EDT and is presented by Daniele Borio and Ciro Gioia, authors of a paper on the topic.

Summary

Modern GNSS receivers have to withstand significant levels of interference in order to operate under harsh conditions, such as in the presence of jamming and of other Radio Frequency (RF) threats. A possibility is to implement pre-correlation interference mitigation techniques that operate directly on the samples provided by the receiver front-end. The speakers’ paper provides an assessment of five interference mitigation techniques at the measurement and position level.

The analysis focuses on the adaptive notch filter (ANF) and on four robust interference mitigation (RIM) techniques. Several data collections were performed in the presence of jamming, and the data were used for the analysis that shows that RIM techniques do not introduce biases at both the measurement and position level. While the ANF delays pseudorange measurements, the biases introduced are predominantly common to all the observations with a negligible impact on a single point positioning (SPP) solution.
