    Frankfurt welcomes INTERGEO 2025 as geospatial tech tackles global challenges

    Geoinformation has evolved from a specialist tool to an essential resource for government, business and civilian use. Whether captured from space or drones, analyzed through artificial intelligence (AI) or 3D visualizations, geographic data now, more than ever, drives critical decisions across industries.

    INTERGEO 2025 exemplifies this transformation. From Oct. 7-9, the Frankfurt Exhibition Center will host the world’s leading conference and trade show for geodesy, geoinformation and land management, featuring more than 500 international exhibitors ranging from innovative startups to industry giants.

    Three-Day Conference Program Features 100 Sessions
    The INTERGEO Conference will present approximately 100 presentations and sessions over three days, drawing speakers from space agencies, United Nations organizations, government ministries and international technology companies.

    Key topics include AI-powered remote sensing, urban digital twins, open data strategies, Earth observation for climate and crisis management and building information modeling (BIM) integration for infrastructure lifecycle management.

    Keynote presentations such as “Earth Observation and Artificial Intelligence” and “Cartography for the Future” will provide forward-looking insights, while panel discussions on digital sovereignty and standardization will address strategic frameworks. Each session demonstrates how geoinformation serves as the critical foundation for climate adaptation, disaster preparedness, urban development and infrastructure protection.

    Opening Day Features Space Technology Focus

    DVW President Prof. Rudolf Staiger will open INTERGEO on Tuesday, Oct. 7, followed by a keynote from Johann Dietrich Wörner, space coordinator for the state of Hesse. His presentation, “Earth Observation and Artificial Intelligence,” will explore how AI transforms massive Earth observation datasets into actionable insights for climate, agriculture and urban planning projects.

    Prof. Serena Coetzee of UNU-FLORES will deliver the German Cartography Congress keynote on Wednesday, Oct. 8, addressing cartography’s evolution amid growing geodata volumes and governance challenges.

    Thursday morning’s panel discussion, “Digital Transformation – Perspectives, Trends and Theses,” will examine the need for reorienting geoinformation management to foster innovation and collaboration.

    Revolutionizing Geospatial Data Analysis

    AI is accelerating the transformation of raw data into actionable insights, fundamentally changing how professionals work with geoinformation. The session “AI-Based Analysis of Remote Sensing Data for Updating the ATKIS Basic DLM” demonstrates practical applications in public administration.

    The Hessian Administration for Soil Management and Geoinformation uses AI methods to automatically detect landscape changes, significantly improving the quality and timeliness of digital landscape models.

    Urban digital twins are rapidly advancing from static models to powerful operational platforms. The session “From Data to Insights: Visualization Technologies for Next-Generation Digital Twins” will showcase how modern visualization makes complex systems accessible and accelerates planning processes.

    The research project “DigitalCities4Us” illustrates practical applications, using high-resolution 3D data to enable barrier-free urban planning and improve accessibility for people with mobility restrictions.

    Additional sessions will examine implementation across administrative levels. “The Digital Twin NRW: A Practical Report” presents a statewide geospatial data infrastructure that is freely accessible and continuously developed. The city of Zurich will demonstrate its transition from traditional geospatial data infrastructures to multifunctional twin platforms.

    Geodata infrastructures, open data and data spaces form the backbone of digital transformation and serve as key prerequisites for digital sovereignty. Multiple sessions will emphasize the importance of stable, future-ready geodata infrastructure.

    Standardization receives particular attention through presentations like “Three Perspectives, One Goal: Digital Sovereignty through Open Standards in BIM and GIS” and the position paper “Official Geodata as a Basis for Digital Processes in Planning, Construction and Operation.” These sessions demonstrate how uniform standards for data exchange between geographic information systems and building information modeling can accelerate planning, construction and operational processes.

    The position paper represents a joint initiative of buildingSMART Germany, the Working Committee of the Surveying Authorities and the Federal Association of Publicly Appointed Surveyors.

    Critical infrastructures require precise, reliable data to minimize risks. The presentation “Regional and Effective Flood Protection in the State Capital of Düsseldorf” demonstrates how geoportals and flood forecasting tools prevent flooding and strengthen urban infrastructure resilience.

    Bringing Innovation to the Exhibition Floor

    The GPS World team touched down in Stuttgart, Germany, for INTERGEO 2024, held from Sept. 24-26.

    This year’s expo and conference, which attracted more than 17,000 visitors from 121 countries and featured 579 exhibitors, showcased solutions to address critical global issues such as climate change, urbanization and GNSS jamming and spoofing.

    GPS World Publisher Brian Kanaba and Account Manager Tim Carolin made their debut at the show, joining veteran Editor-in-Chief Matteo Luccio.     Live INTERGEO exceeds expectations

    INTERGEO, a huge geospatial conference, was hosted in Essen, Germany and digitally on October 18-20. The event was attended by 457 exhibitors from 31 countries and about 14,000 trade visitors from 102 countries. “The results clearly exceed our expectations. We are very pleased to finally be able to bring many people together again with the live event,” explained Prof. Dr. Hansjörg Kutterer, President of the organizer, DVW e.V., Association for Geodesy, Geoinformation and Land Management.

    This year, INTERGEO placed a focus on digital twins. Cooperation, collaboration and the sharing of information are crucial for the success of the digitalization of city, country and space. Other focal points of this year’s INTERGEO included smart cities, building information modelling (BIM), sustainability, mobility, and climate change.

    The EXPO, the event’s exhibit area, presented a broad portfolio of the geospatial industry. In addition to terrestrial recording and airborne solutions such as drones, exhibitors also presented automated solutions for recording space. Geoinformation systems and BIM solutions demonstrated their potential in data analysis, monitoring and decision support.

    The DVW is also working to raise awareness for the geospatial sector and to demonstrate its potential. For the first time, Prof. Kutterer awarded the newly created “DVW Future Prize” to the “Connected Urban Twins” project with the participating cities of Hamburg, Leipzig and Munich. The DVW Future Prize is awarded for groundbreaking ideas of outstanding interdisciplinary and social significance.

    To promote young talent, the DVW presented the “INTERGEO Next Generation Science and Geoinnovation Award,” honoring outstanding pitches on young researchers’ work. This year’s winner, Steffen Becker from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, was awarded for his master’s thesis on traffic monitoring with drones.

    Next year, INTERGEO will take place in Berlin, October 10-12.

    The INTERGEO Expo & Conference focuses on innovations for a smarter world. INTERGEO 2022 will take place October 18-20 in Essen, Germany.

    Topics including the importance of geoinformation for internal security, monitoring for disaster control and prevention, open data, digital twins alongside their use in construction and housing, mobility, sustainability and climate change, BIM and engineering applications with UAV, laser scanning and monitoring will be discussed during the 2022 event.

    Additionally, the outdoor area of Messe Essen will show live demonstrations of the latest UAV applications in surveying, agriculture, construction, security and many more.

    According to INTERGEO organizers, 300 international companies are already registered at the Expo, from innovative young start-ups to international key players such as Autodesk, Esri Inc., Hexagon, Trimble, Topcon and many more. The organizers expect around 500 exhibitors by October.

    “All the international key players in the industry will be there.There was no doubt about it – they all want to get back to their customers, to visitors, to the live atmosphere and the power of meetings”, says Prof. Dr-Ing. Hansjörg Kutterer, President of the organiser DVW e.V., Association for Geodesy, Geoinformation and Land Management.

    For those who are unable to attend the event in Germany, there will be some opportunities to participate in the Expo remotely.

    Up close and personal

    Digital Twins will receive their big break at the Conference 2022. Their use in building information modeling, smart planning and construction as well as mobility will be the focus of the event. Digital twins will be used to further development of urban data platforms in the context of smart cities and their variety of applications, as well as the use of smart city solutions in terms of innovation and sustainability and a basis for predictions and scenarios in the event of disasters.

    The main topics in 2022 are Digital Twins and their value creation, 4D geodata and Geospatial IoT, potentials of remote sensing, BIM 4.0, industrial surveying, measurement systems and robotics, smart cities and mobility in the context of climate change and sustainability, mobile mapping, web services and GeoIT in disaster relief, spatial reference and positioning, earth observation and Galileo.

    Hansjörg Kutterer points out the high innovative power of the industry: “We are experiencing high dynamics in segments such as mobility, environment and sustainability, climate protection and urbanization. Geo-IT has positioned itself as a solution provider for these topics. Problem-solving without Geo-IT is unthinkable in these subject areas. Come to Essen on the 18th to 20th of October and visit Intergeo Expo and Conference.”

    News from the European GNSS Agency (GSA)

    Galileo and EGNOS were the focus of attention at a special workshop at this year’s Intergeo in Stuttgart, which took place in September. Intergeo is the world’s leading conference and trade fair for geodesy, geo-information and land management.

    Intergeo provided an opportunity to give an update on the status of the Galileo and EGNOS programs and to present user case studies at a special workshop focusing on the geomatics market.

    In his presentation at the conference, Eduard Escalona, Market Development Innovation Officer at the European GNSS Agency (GSA), stressed the key role of GNSS.

    “GNSS is a cornerstone in many areas: It is a fundamental element for cadastral surveying, in the construction sector, in mining, land surveying and mapping activities, for all geographic information systems (GIS), for infrastructure monitoring and for marine surveying. For all of you who are working in these and many other areas, Galileo is now helping to provide the GNSS services you need,” he said.

    Dual-frequency boosts market

    The European GNSS programs, Galileo and EGNOS, continue to move forward in terms of adoption by the professional market and among general users, thanks in no small part to the development of dual-frequency capability.

    Traditionally, mobile, location-based applications have been powered by single-frequency GNSS receivers operating under stringent battery-power and footprint constraints. With a dual-frequency chipset, these devices now benefit from better accuracy, ionosphere error cancellation, improved tracking and better multipath resistance.

    Galileo is leading the way in the area of dual-frequency signal delivery, now with more dual-frequency operational satellites in orbit than any other GNSS system. Market uptake of Galileo receivers has been impressive; in addition to the geomatics-related areas of particular interest to the Intergeo public, dual-frequency GNSS chipsets are also appearing in the automotive sector, where connected cars and autonomous vehicles present a clear and pressing need for accurate and reliable positioning information.

    New services to come

    “To date, more than one billion Galileo-enabled devices have been sold,” said Escalona, “but Galileo isn’t standing still, waiting. We are proposing new services to appear in the coming years.”

    These include the much-anticipated High-Accuracy Service (HAS) and a new Authentication Service. “The HAS will be a free, globally available service providing an accuracy of 20 cm, with PPP [Precise Point Positioning] corrections,” Escalona said.

    Meanwhile, the Authentication Service (OS-NMA) will provide protection against jamming, spoofing and meaconing on the E1B signal and a separate Signal Authentication Service (SAS) will provide an even higher level of protection on the E6 signal.

    “EGNOS is currently working with GPS, but of course we are looking forward to augmenting Galileo in the near future,” said Sergio Cabrera Bona, EGNOS Service Adoption Tools Engineer at the European Satellite Services Provider, whose core activities comprise EGNOS operations and service provision.

    “GNSS is critical in all of these fields, whether it is mapping and GIS, farming, forestry, thermal pictures, management of natural terrains,” Cabrera said. He listed other areas, including management and inspection of utilities, power networks, water supply, telecoms, drones, inventory, surveying, field campaigns and determination of perimeters in agriculture as areas where GNSS plays a key role.

    “It is not possible to mention all of the activities where you need reliable positioning. What you have to know is that with EGNOS augmentations you already have a horizontal accuracy below one metre and a vertical accuracy below two metres, so this is a very good accuracy,” he said.

    There is much more that could potentially be done right now, Cabrera explained. “Most of the professional equipment is already EGNOS-enabled, but in practice users do not always configure their equipment correctly to exploit this capability. EGNOS adoption and support is going ahead full speed, but in the GNSS device market, many users still do not know they can use EGNOS. So the education process remains an ongoing effort,” he said.

    Cabrera explained that the EGNOS user support website can be an important part of this educational drive on the top of the help desk. “We have very interesting tools and resources available online. For example, we will have a new EGNOS usability map available very soon on the website. With this tool you will be able to easily see the current availability of EGNOS signals in your location, which will be very useful especially in urban environments, for example. We also have many user support services and there is a new mobile app coming, so please visit our website and take advantage of EGNOS. It is there for you.”

    Introducing the GSC

    Galileo services improvement expert Pedro Gómez Martínez informed participants about the European GNSS Service Centre (GSC), defining both the concept of operations as well as the procedures necessary to provide the services that the GSA offers to Galileo users.

    “The European GNSS Service Centre is the single interface between the infrastructure and users of the Galileo open services, commercial service and search and rescue service (SAR),” said Gómez. “So the GSC is a center that provides experts, know-how, evaluation of capability, distribution of information and support for the provision of value-added services provided by the Galileo system.”

    The GSC website is a core resource for Galileo users, Gómez said, reporting real-time system status and incident notifications, with a bank of key documents and a full-time help desk. “It is very important for us that this is a two-way interactive service that includes your feedback. We need you to report any incidents that you might experience related to the product, service and data provision. We are very interested in user satisfaction, and we want to know how you respond to improvements. And of course, in general, we are here to promote GNSS in all its forms, in all areas, for all users.”

    The GSC launched a new version of its website in the run-up to the InterGEO event. “More than ever we are making it easier for you to engage in dialogue with us and to provide your feedback. This is very important to us with new services coming up in the future,” Gomez said.

    Research fundamentals

    “One of the very important responsibilities of the GSA is the management of a number of EGNSS research and development programmes,” said Eduard Escalona. “We have Horizon 2020, the European Union’s research Framework Programme. There we have a final call for proposals coming up in November, with a deadline in March 2020. The GSA also is overseeing the Fundamental Elements programme, which is funding research specifically targeted at developing Galileo-enabled chipsets, receivers and related technologies.”

    To illustrate Escalona’s point, the presentations featured EU-funded GNSS-related research projects leveraging the accuracy and integrity offered by Galileo. Pere Molina of Geonumerics presented the MapKite project. Funded under Horizon 2020 and now completed, MapKite integrates an unmanned aerial system (UAS) and a mobile mapping aystem (MMS) for simultaneous capture of geo-data from the air and from the ground. Molina showed data from a successful corridor mapping exercise run using the MapKite system.
