  • Airbus Releases Satellite Imagery of Nepal Earthquake

    Following Nepal’s devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake on Saturday, Airbus Defence and Space has acquired Pléiades satellites imagery to support the International Charter and Copernicus Emergency Management Service. The data acquired will assist in assessing the damage and help rescue organizations in the delivery of humanitarian aid.

    The before and after Pléiades images over Kathmandu (full image can be downloaded here) show the devastation caused by the earthquake. The below “before” Pléiades image was acquired on Nov. 29, 2014, and the “after” Pléiades image was acquired on April 27, 2015, two days after the earthquake.

    The Airbus Pléiades 1A and Pléiades 1B satellites operate as a constellation in the same orbit, phased 180 degrees apart. The identical twin satellites deliver high-resolution optical data products and can revisit any point on the globe, according to Airbus.

  • Airbus Launches WorldDEM Digital Terrain Model

    Airbus Defence and Space has launched its WorldDEM Digital Terrain Model (DTM), a highly accurate standardized representation of bare Earth elevation that can be made available for any point on the globe. This addition completes the WorldDEM portfolio, enabling Airbus Defence and Space to provide both surface and terrain elevation information in support of global customer projects.

    WorldDEM DTM can be delivered for more than 90 Million km² of the Earth’s landmass.

    The WorldDEM DTM is derived from the WorldDEM product (Digital Surface Model) by removing all man-made features and vegetation. The quality of the original WorldDEM product combined with a sophisticated editing process guarantees highly precise and consistent terrain information, Airbus said. While surface features (such as built-up areas and vegetation) are reliably removed, characteristic terrain features such as ridge lines or mountain crests are preserved.

    The WorldDEM DTM provides an excellent foundation layer for a wide range of applications such as civil engineering (road design, earthwork calculation), the management of natural resources (such as flood modeling), mapping (such as derivation of contour lines) as well as military mission planning (vehicle trafficability analysis, 3D terrain visualization).

     WorldDEM is based on data acquired by the high-resolution radar satellites TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X, which started synchronous data acquisition in December 2010 and completed coverage of the Earth’s entire landmass twice over in mid-2013. The satellites covered more complex terrain areas with a third and fourth acquisition campaign to ensure consistent high quality and accuracy of the final product. WorldDEM provides the first global, single-source, high-precision Digital Surface Model and has established a new standard of global elevation models.

  • GEOINT Coverage, Day 2: Keynotes, Airbus, Skyline

    GEOINT 2013* — Day Two

    Today was the official start of the GEOINT 2013* Symposium. Attendance was estimated at 3,500.

    Keynote speakers included James Clapper, director of National Intelligence (DNI), LTG Michael Flynn, director, Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), and Lettitia Long, director, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA).

    I had an opportunity to attend a separate press briefing by Director Long (watch below).

    Included is a large exhibit hall, and today I started touring the booths. In the video below, I talk with Matt Harrison of Skyline as he demonstrates the company’s technology to generate 3D models from oblique imagery.

    Also, AirBus demonstrated its global DEM data set.

  • Airbus Mobilizes Satellites to Help Locate Missing Airliner

    Airbus Defence and Space has mobilized five observation satellites to aid in the search for the missing Malaysian Airlines plane. The Boeing 777 disappeared on March 8 during a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

    The day after the aircraft disappeared,the very high-resolution Pléaides 1A and 1B satellites, the high-resolution SPOT 5 and 6 satellites, and the synthetic aperture radar satellites TerraSAR-X were programmed to take images of the search zone. All the data collected are analyzed by Airbus Defence and Space maritime experts and provided to the Malaysian Remote Sensing Agency (MRSA).

    The Pléiades images are also transferred via CNES, and TerraSAR-X images via DLR, to the Chinese Meteorological Administration, which requested the Disaster Charter activation on March 11.

    Since Sunday, March 9, the experts of Airbus Defence and Space have been analyzing the images taken by the optical and radar satellites. The radar satellites like TerraSAR-X are able to identify layers of hydrocarbon as well as any oil slick or metallic objects floating on the sea. The resolution of the optical satellites Pléiades 1A & 1B (50 cm after resampling) and SPOT 5 and 6 allow for identification and characterization of small objects over large surfaces.

  • Airbus Helicopters Selects Honeywell Navigation System

    Honeywell Aerospace’s LASEREF VI navigation system has been selected by Airbus Helicopters for its light helicopter platforms, the EC145 T2 and EC645 T2 family.

    The LASEREF inertial reference unit (IRU) allows helicopter operators to always have an autonomous navigation source available in the absence of a GNSS and radio navigation. The capability is especially useful when navigating during a mission when the GNSS is unavailable due to terrain masking, limited satellite constellation availability, or unintentional or intentional jamming.

    “LASEREF will provide Airbus Helicopters with exactly what they’re looking for — an always-available and highly reliable navigation system,” said Varant Panossian, customer business manager at Honeywell Aerospace. “When you’re in extreme situations, navigation is essential for everything from crew safety to completing critical missions.”

    Designed for fixed-wing and rotary-wing applications, the LASEREF is a light, small IRU that delivers the highest reliability in the industry, according to Honeywell. Its integration with GPS prevents delays in information delivery and keeps operations running safely and efficiently even under harsh environments and demanding mission situations.
