  • MB&G Upgrades MobileMap App for GIS Data Organization

    Mason, Bruce & Girard Inc. (MB&G), a natural resource consulting firm, has released version 2.0 of its mobile mapping application, MobileMap.

    MB&G MobileMap provides GIS capabilities to field staff. It focuses on supporting large datasets and integrating information from diverse sources. The app provides data visualization, analysis and editing while operating in disconnected environments.

    MobileMap supports an unlimited number of base maps and feature types, and allows users to quickly switch between data by turning layers on and off. Version 2.0 of MobileMap provides flexibility in how data is organized on a device, and by supporting Esri’s shapefile format, users can define the map symbology of shapefiles.

    By targeting the Android platform, MobileMap takes advantage of a large range of device options as well as capabilities unique to Android such as support for MicroSD cards, which greatly enhance storage capacity while dramatically reducing data transfer speeds for large datasets.

    A major component of this release is improved data sync capabilities. MobileMap leverages enterprise GIS technology from Esri by enabling seamless sync with ArcGIS Server and ArcGIS Online feature services. Users will always have data that is backed up and up-to-date. By establishing a Wi-Fi connection, data can be synced to a secured service. In order to provide greater control over this process, MobileMap allows users to separate sync into separate upload and download tasks.

    According to MB&G, MobileMap 2.0 provides improved measurement and navigation capabilities; users can now measure both distance and area of features and can choose the appropriate map units for each parameter.

    MobileMap 2.0 displays the distance and direction to any selected feature, allowing field staff to navigate to management areas, survey plots or specific assets. Another new capability is the ability to perform offline search of features. While other mapping tools use internet connections to search for relevant data, MobileMap supports the ability to search offline data to identify where particular attributes or conditions exist in the landscape. When features are discovered, they are highlighted and the map zooms to their extent. These capabilities provide field staff with a valuable tool for discovering data and locating areas of interest.

    MobileMap’s data capture also has been improved. Previous versions supported GPS tracking of a travel path and the ability to define new features using GPS coordinates, or by tapping to create points or vertices in lines and polygons. Users now can collect lines and polygons by tracing the desired shape in a single motion.

    Data entry has been improved by supporting additional business rules, such as range domains and required fields. Data managers can carefully specify data integrity rules using Esri data models, and MobileMap will respect and enforce those rules in the field. This functionality helps to ensure that MobileMap users will collect high quality data thereby minimizing the need for data editing back in the office.

  • Esri Releases Nighttime Flow Analysis Solution for Water Loss

    Esri has released its Nighttime Flow Analysis solution. The COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) configuration of Esri’s ArcGIS platform helps water utilities identify areas with underground leaks and other sources of non-revenue water loss.

    “This solution really highlights how ArcGIS can be used in a holistic workflow at a utility,” said Michael Miller, Esri solutions manager. “Utilities can quickly show a return on investment from managing an accurate asset database.”

    Esri says the return on investment from Nighttime Flow Analysis comes from utilities finding and fixing underground leaks and other sources of water loss that could go undetected, sometimes for months.

    “Over the long term, Nighttime Flow Analysis improves the utility’s operations and capital planning through narrowing down the areas of high water loss,” Miller said. “This can cut repairs from months to weeks or even days, and it can even prevent service disasters.”

    Nighttime Flow Analysis works by using an optimal time to analyze for leaks, which typically at night when household water consumption is significantly low. At the lowest point, the observed GPM from the area is entered into the solution. By comparing this observation to the expected flow, the utility can iterate through different Sub-DMA configurations without creating permanent DMA’s to determine potential nonrevenue water loss, or water that flows somewhere but isn’t reaching a meter.

  • Esri Launches AppStudio for ArcGIS App Challenge

    Esri launched the beta version of its AppStudio for ArcGIS and is requesting submissions for its App Challenge by May 1.

    With AppStudio for ArcGIS, users can build their own ArcGIS native apps that will automatically run on Android, iOS, Windows, OS X and Linux platforms. Existing ArcGIS can be made into consumer-friendly apps for the Google Play and Apple app stores. There also are app templates to create map galleries and crowd-sourcing apps.

    To enter the contest, email the video to Esri with a short write-up, company name and signed official rules. The builder of the best app will be announced by Esri on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, and may be featured on the Esri website.

    Since AppStudio for ArcGIS leverages the power of the ArcGIS Runtime, users can build their own native apps featuring advanced GIS capabilities such as offline visualization, editing, querying and analysis. It also includes a utility called AppStudio Player that will enables users to easily share their own apps within their organizations or companies.

    AppStudio for ArcGIS Beta was introduced at Esri’s 2015 Developer Summit, held March 10-13 in Palm Springs, Calif.

  • MemSQL Brings Geospatial Analysis to In-Memory, Distributed Databases

    MemSQL, which specializes in real-time databases for transactions and analytics, has announced new geospatial capabilities for its in-memory, distributed SQL-based database. By bringing together geospatial and operational data in the same high speed database, customers can achieve unprecedented agility for geospatial analysis, MemSQL said.

    Unlike segregated solutions, MemSQL integrates geospatial data as a primary data type, making it as easy to use and operate at scale with as much speed and high throughput as any other class of data.

    Previously, enterprises were forced to segregate their geospatial data into separate data stores. With the rise of IoT and mobility, nearly all data is location-specific. As data volume increases, maintaining geolocation information outside of the primary datastore leads to longer latency and synchronization challenges.

    By integrating geospatial functions, MemSQL enables enterprises to achieve greater database efficiency with a single database that is in-memory, linearly scalable and supports the full range of relational SQL and geospatial functions. With MemSQL, geospatial data no longer remains separate and becomes just another data type with lock-free capabilities and powerful manipulation functions.

    Taxi Scenario with Esri. Working with MemSQL and Apache Spark, Esri analyzed data compiled from 170 million real-world New York City taxi rides around the GPS coordinates of pickups and dropoffs, as well as distance and travel time. Slicing by hour of the day, Esri can calculate the average speed of a taxi ride and find the best and worst places for traffic jams. Slicing by day of the week, the ebb and flow of traffic during workdays and weekends becomes visible.

    For a city planner, this data insight can be used to redirect traffic at specific times in an effort to unclog traffic congestion. For the taxi business, this data can improve efficiency with supply and demand of cabs during times of high or low traffic for any given region.

  • LandWorks Tightens Integration with Esri in Land Management Software Upgrades

    LandWorks Inc., a developer of innovative land management solutions, has introduced Release 5.20 of its three primary software suites — LandWorks Property Management, LandWorks GIS, and WebMaps Enterprise GIS. All three have been re-written for easier use, enhanced industry-specific functionality, and tighter integration with Esri GIS solutions.

    “In Release 5.20, we rebuilt the software from the ground up with a combination of C# [Sharp] .NET and a service-oriented architecture,” said LandWorks President Jerry Bramwell. “This modern architecture allows for integration of live Esri GIS maps and builds a foundation for hosting in the cloud.”

    Deployed extensively for land asset management and mapping in the oil and gas, utility, mining, pipeline, renewable energy and government sectors, the upgraded LandWorks software suites are expected to appeal to an even wider audience. In addition, their applicability within organizations will expand beyond land management to project planning, acquisition and development.

    The flagship LandWorks Property Management (LPM) suite is a complete solution for land asset management designed for easy storage and retrieval of data relating to any type of land right. In the new LPM version 5.20, clients may open an oil and gas lease or right-of-way agreement and instantly access a live GIS map displaying the relevant polygons. Direct integration with Esri’s ArcGIS Server gives the client full web-based GIS functionality from within the LPM interface and the ability to update the live map with new information on the fly.

    “LPM is the only land asset management software with embedded live access to Esri GIS maps,” Bramwell said.

    The LandWorks suites, used worldwide, also have been internationalized to support the language, date, currency and measurement formats preferred by individual end users based on their locations. A large mining company with operations in multiple countries, for example, may deploy the LandWorks suites across its enterprise. End users in Portugal, Spain and Canada are able to view the same information presented in Portuguese, Spanish or English.

    In addition to a more intuitive interface with a modern look and feel, LandWorks has added new functionality to the software products designed for greater ease-of-use in specific industries. The ability to make land royalty payments for mining and wind energy operations has been expanded. LPM and LandWorks GIS have been enhanced to better manage and present linear-based land rights.

    “The enhancement of our products to better manage land rights associated with linear assets will make the LandWorks suites more attractive to transportation and telecommunications industries,” said Bramwell.

    LandWorks has built new modules to the LPM suite to extend its usability across the entire land management workflow. LPM now manages land-related projects of any type or size including acquisition, surveying and encroachment investigation.

    The three LandWorks suites comprise a total of 18 individually licensed software products, many of which can function alone or interface with LPM. LandWorks GIS integrates the Esri GIS functionality into LPM. WebMaps Enterprise GIS Suite extends web-based mapping via ArcGIS Server across the enterprise to all departments, not just the land department.

    “All LandWorks software products currently reside behind the client’s firewall, however, we will soon offer hosting in the cloud as an additional licensing optional for our clients,” said Bramwell.

  • Report: Esri Has 43 Percent Share of GIS Market

    ARC Advisory Group reports that Esri has a 43 percent share in the geographic information system (GIS) market, compared to an 11 percent share from the second-largest supplier. ARC Advisory Group published its findings in an October market study and forecast through 2018.

    “Esri is, without a doubt, the dominant player in the GIS market,” the Geographic Information System Global Market Research Study authors stated.

    The Esri business model relies on a constantly improving core GIS, on which more than 2,000 partners develop Esri industry-specific solutions, Esri said. In electricity transportation and distribution, Esri’s partner-driven solution model, which combines Esri and Schneider Electric software, amounts to a total market share of 29 percent.

    “Our success in the utility sector stems from Esri’s platform technology, which makes it easy for companies to share, communicate, and collaborate on location information throughout their businesses,” Esri utilities solutions manager Bill Meehan said. “Partner solutions, such as those Schneider Electric provide, add additional capability to an already powerful platform.”

    Esri’s core GIS is used by more than two-thirds of Fortune 500 companies, helping businesses add a location strategy to operations, Esri said. Esri’s ArcGIS platform has grown during the past 45 years to include cloud, mobile, server, dashboard, and firewall components in addition to desktop applications.

    Partner products target utility-specific issues (such as regulatory compliance or critical-infrastructure management). Partners include Apple, Microsoft, Intel, Oracle, Dell, HP, Citrix, and Lenovo.

  • Lockheed, Esri Cloud Deployment Enables Government GIS Sharing

    Lockheed Martin and Esri have deployed commercial software to the Amazon Web Services Commercial Cloud Services (C2S) environment for the first time with an intelligence community customer, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA). The move enables government agencies to better share geospatial intelligence.

    The deployment of the portal for Esri’s ArcGIS geographic information system (GIS) provides a single environment for analysts to securely organize and share data throughout the intelligence community and Department of Defense. It’s also the foundational step in consolidating multiple geospatial intelligence portals into the single NGA-provided portal, resulting in technology and license cost savings.

    This is NGA’s second pioneering step in the cloud, after the agency moved its Map of the World application to the C2S environment late last year.

    “Deploying Esri’s Portal for ArcGIS to a commercial cloud environment securely organizes existing data and facilitates collaboration across intelligence agencies,” said Jason O’Connor, vice president of Analysis and Mission Solutions for Lockheed Martin. “This cloud implementation also further shapes the government’s processes for architecting and implementing enterprise class services within a cloud environment.”

    ArcGIS connects users to maps and geographic information. Users can create and view maps, compile geographic data, analyze mapped information and share geographic information in a range of applications.

    “Working with Lockheed Martin and the NGA on this strategic implementation for national security is particularly meaningful,” said Jack Dangermond, Esri president. “It recognizes the importance of consolidating geospatial intelligence information into a single portal to facilitate rapid situational awareness and response by our intelligence community.”

    Lockheed Martin and Esri have partnered for eight years on the Geospatial-Intelligence Visualization Services (GVS) program, which helped NGA and the Intelligence Community achieve this cloud migration milestone. The Total Application Services for Enterprise Requirements (TASER) GVS contract vehicle, which was originally awarded in 2012, conveys geospatial visualization context and analytic capabilities to warfighters, intelligence officers and policy-makers through classified and unclassified computer networks.

  • Esri Offers Online Seminar on Collector for ArcGIS

    Esri is hosting an online seminar to familiarize customers with its Collector for ArcGIS app. Using the app can mean replacing paper-based data inspection and maintenance workflows with computerized ones that allow anyone in an organization to easily capture and update data from their tablet or smartphone when they’re out in the field.

    The Esri live training seminar Simplify Field Data Workflows with Collector for ArcGIS will be held on February 19. The presenters will demonstrate how the app, included with ArcGIS organizational accounts, can help organizations maintain accurate and up-to-date GIS data while making the information collection process easier and more efficient.
