    Trimble Introduces Ashtech High-Accuracy GNSS Module for System Integrators

    MB-OneTrimble introduced today the Ashtech MB-One GNSS module. The MB-One delivers highly accurate GNSS-based heading plus pitch or roll in an advanced industry standard form-factor for system integrators.

    The announcement was made today at the AUVSI 2013 Conference and Exhibition.

    Its embedded Z-Blade GNSS technology uses all available GNSS signals equally, without any constellation preference, to deliver fast and stable solutions. The MB-One is designed to add precise positioning and heading in a wide variety of applications such as unmanned, agriculture, marine and military systems.

    “System integrators demand high performance, reliability and support for their positioning solutions,” said Olivier Casabianca, business development manager for the Trimble’s GNSS OEM products. “The MB-One is designed for easy integration and rugged dependability. Users can leverage the module’s Ethernet capability and easy-to-use web browser interface to quickly and cost-effectively develop their products and solutions.”

    The MB-One features an enhanced dual-core GNSS engine with 240 channels capable of tracking a large range of GNSS systems including GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou. It uses over-the-air satellite corrections using L-Band hardware to achieve decimeter-level accuracy. The module is capable of receiving and decoding Precise Point Positioning (PPP) to output a highly accurate position solution that removes the need for a local base station.

    The Ashtech MB-One module will be available through the Trimble GNSS OEM international network of representatives and authorized dealers. Evaluation units will be available in the fourth quarter of 2013 and production units are expected to be available in the first quarter of 2014.

     

  • u-blox Introduces High-Performance Parallel GPS/GLONASS Module

    Swiss u-blox introduces the surface-mount MAX-M5Q, a compact satellite positioning module that supports GPS and GLONASS, as well as Japanese QZSS satellite GNSS systems. High-performance GPS/GLONASS parallel operation is also supported to enhance positioning speed and accuracy.

    Designed for use in rugged environments and wide temperature range, MAX-M5Q is intended for industrial machine-to-machine (M2M) applications as well as Russia’s ERA-GLONASS emergency call system. MAX-M5Q enhances positioning in poor GNSS satellite visibility conditions as well as in high latitude and polar regions, u-blox said.

    “With parallel GPS/GLONASS operation, MAX-M5Q is able to track all 50 and more U.S. and Russian satellites to deliver incomparable speed, accuracy, and positional availability,” said Thomas Nigg, vice president of Product Marketing at u-blox, “Its compact size and high-reliability makes it an ideal positioning solution for mobile resource management and ERA-GLONASS emergency call applications.”

    With dimensions of 9.7 x 10.1 x 2.5 mm, MAX-M5Q is the newest member of u-blox’ MAX GNSS LCC module series. Additional features include autonomous A-GPS that reduces warm start TTFF by as much as 90%, and an embedded data logger which can store location information to internal Flash memory for up to 16 hours at 15 second intervals.

  • SIMcom Launches Modules at Mobile World Congress

    SIMCom Wireless Solutions Ltd. of Shanghai launched its first compact LGA 2G module SIM900E at Mobile World Congress 2013 today. The module’s small size and LGA encapsulation suit M2M applications of all sizes, especially satisfying requirements for slim, compact design, SIMcom said. The Mobile World Congress is being held in Barcelona, Spain, this week.

    With operations from 2002 to 2013, SIMCom has just celebrated its 10th anniversary. The company has developed into a global leader of wireless solutions with the integration of R&D, production, sales and after-sales services, and with products covering technologies such as GPS, GLONASS, GSM/GPRS, WCDMA/HSPA, TD-SCDMA, CDMA EVDO, SRD, and Wi-Fi. The products have been sold in more than 100 countries and regions, involving almost all M2M industries. With the celebration of its 10th anniversary, SIMCom also launched its first company magazine, SIMCom Inside.

    SIMCom launched its module series of 2G/3G, with the same size of 30 x 30 millimeters, including SIM928, SIM968, SIM5310 and more. Integrated with GSM/GPRS and GPS, the SIM928 module is a compact quad-Band GSM/GPRS-enabled module based on the PNX4851 platform. SIM968 is a combo module featuring quad-band GSM/GPRS and combining GLONASS technology for satellite navigation. SIM5310 is a low-cost 3G module that supports WCDMA 384Kbps and single frequency band 2100 MHz. In addition, SIMCom will also introduce the first LTE intelligent module SIM7290.

    The compact module SIM900E released today has an LGA encapsulation of 19.8 x 19.8 x 2.7 millimeters, and its LGA encapsulation is suitable for automatic assembly with SMT equipment, the company said. The configuration of four frequencies of GSM/GPRS — 850/900/1800/1900MHz — and wide temperature range of -40C to +85C is designed for global seamless coverage and various industrial application environments.

  • u-blox 3G module certified by Korean’s SK Telecom

    u-blox, the Swiss positioning and wireless chip and module company, has received approval for its LISA-U110 UMTS/HSPA wireless module from SK Telecom, Korea’s largest mobile telecom operator with more than 50 percent market share. SK Telecom provides multimedia services and connectivity to 24 million customers throughout South Korea.

    The certification allows the LISA modem to be used in a wide range of consumer and M2M applications operating over SK Telecom’s nation-wide 3G network including vehicle infotainment, supply chain management, industrial automation, metering, security, and location-based services.

    “We are very pleased that SK Telecom has chosen to work with us on this 3G approval. Our compact and high-speed LISA 3G module is a perfect fit with their strategy to provide converged wireless services supporting entertainment, business and financial applications. Our local support in Korea was a key factor in obtaining this certification” said Samuel Ji, u-blox Country Manager, Korea.

    The LISA-U110 is an embedded wireless UMTS/HSPA module delivering high data rates in 3G networks intended for consumer, automotive and industrial applications. For telematics applications, the series provides easy integration with u-blox GPS, GLONASS and QZSS receivers.

    LISA modules come in SMT form factor and have a very small footprint, allowing easy mounting on any application board. The LISA form factor enables easy manufacturing, u-blox said, as well as simple migration from u‑blox’ GSM/GPRS modules. Support for A-GPS and u-blox’ CellLocate positioning technology is embedded to facilitate advanced telematics applications including indoor positioning.

    Features include compatibility with quad-band GPRS/EDGE, low power (idle mode less than 2 mA) and operating temperature -40 to +85 deg. Celsius. RIL software for Android and Embedded Windows is available free of charge.

    LISA modules are manufactured in ISO/TS 16949 certified sites and are fully qualified according to ISO 16750 — Environmental conditions and electrical testing for electrical and electronic equipment for road vehicles to provide high durability and reliability.

     

  • u-blox Introduces Small Multi-GNSS Module with Built-in Antenna

    u-blox, the Swiss positioning and wireless module and chip company, announces UC530M, a tiny parallel GPS/GLONASS module with built-in antenna. The antenna module can be embedded in space-restricted environments because of its tiny footprint of 9.6 x 14.0 x 1.95 millimeters. The highly integrated SMT design reduces the need for external components and minimizes manufacturing costs, u-blox said.

    “Location-aware functionality in ever-smaller consumer and industrial devices is a clear market trend. This presents an increasing challenge to OEMs,” said Thomas Nigg, vice president of product marketing at u-blox. “Manufacturers are confronted with the difficult task of providing fast and accurate positioning in compact devices, while time-to-market and price pressure call for minimal R&D effort and low cost. The new UC530M is built to address these requirements: a complete low-power, high performance multi-GNSS receiver with integrated antenna. The module is easy to integrate in a wide variety of devices cost-effectively.”

    With high sensitivity, -165 dBm in tracking, and very low power consumption, typically only 66 mW average power consumption, the UC530M can be directly connected to a lithium battery, eliminating costly voltage regulators. Advanced low-power modes are also supported along with three days self-assistance support. Additional functionality includes a logger function which stores location information in internal memory. With a typical log interval of 15 seconds, log capacity can be up to 16 hours.

    The integrated antenna of the UC530M exhibits significantly better radiation efficiency than small patch antennas, and performs well against larger and heavier patch antennas. Its circular radiation pattern brings flexibility to hardware designs, u-blox said. The optional connectivity to an external antenna extends the applicability of the module to a wider range of devices from handheld computers to asset tracking systems. The module is drop-in compatible with the UC530 GPS antenna module announced in June 2012.

    Engineering samples of the UC530M modules are available in December 2012.

  • u-blox Launches u-blox 7 GPS, GLONASS and QZSS Modules

    u-blox, the Swiss positioning and wireless module and chip company, has announced its latest multi-GNSS receiver modules MAX-7, NEO-7 and LEA-7 in u-blox’s form factors. They support all satellite positioning systems in operation today: GPS, GLONASS, QZSS and SBAS. The modules target telematics applications such as asset and fleet management as well as portable tracking devices.

    “Each MAX-7, NEO-7 and LEA-7 variant delivers fast, accurate and reliable GLONASS and GPS positioning with the industry’s lowest power consumption.” said Daniel Ammann, executive VP of positioning product development at u-blox. “Both GPS AND GLONASS modes perform even better than combined GPS/GLONASS solutions available on the market today.”

    All u-blox 7 generation modules are pin-to-pin compatible with previous u-blox 6 and u-blox 5 families allowing easy upgrade from existing designs. Each module is available in cost-effective variants (such as MAX-7C; NEO-7M) as well as performance optimized variants (MAX-7Q, MAX-7W, NEO-7N, LEA-7N).

    u-blox 7 modules use GPS/GNSS chips qualified according to AEC-Q100 and are manufactured at ISO/TS 16949 certified sites. Each module is intensively inspected and tested during production. The modules are fully qualified according to ISO 16750 – “Environmental conditions and electrical testing for electrical and electronic equipment for road vehicles” to provide high durability and reliability.

    All modules comply with green/halogen free standards.

    First variants available will be NEO-7N (November 2012) and MAX-7C (December 2012).

  • Trimble Launches AP20-C GNSS Inertial OEM Module with MEMS Inertial Sensors

    Trimble has introduced the AP20-C, the latest addition to its AP Series of embedded GNSS-Inertial OEM boards plus Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). Using a compact, custom-built IMU based on commercial Micro Electromechanical Machined (MEMS) inertial sensors, the AP20-C enables system integrators to achieve high-rate position and orientation measurements with exceptional accuracy, Trimble said.

    The announcement was made at AUVSI’s Unmanned Systems North America 2012 Conference and Exhibition being held this week in Las Vegas.

    Featuring proven Applanix IN-Fusion GNSS-Inertial integration technology, the AP20-C is an embedded GNSS-Inertial OEM board set plus IMU designed for continuous mobile positioning in poor signal environments and high-accuracy direct georeferencing of imaging sensors. The AP20-C delivers full, high-rate position and orientation measurements at 200 Hz, ensuring it can be used in the most demanding mobile environments without sacrificing performance. It is fully compatible with the industry-leading Applanix POSPac MMS office software for enhanced accuracy using network differential GNSS.

    “Compact in form and low in power consumption, the AP20-C can provide cost-effective, accurate, reliable and robust position and orientation measurements suitable for a broad range of survey and mapping applications, including airborne, terrestrial, and marine mapping as well as guidance for unmanned vehicle applications,” said Joe Hutton, director of Inertial Technology and Airborne Products at Applanix, a Trimble Company.
