  • New Leica Aibot facilitates accurate, safe aerial surveys

    Leica Geosystems has released the Leica Aibot, its latest unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system based on DJI’s aerial platform, the M600 Pro, designed to rapidly and autonomously enable digitizing of critical infrastructure.

    Leica Geosystems’ UAV technology enables users to get a complete data set in less time with a user-friendly and innovative interface, opening new business opportunities while reducing time, costs and effort from with traditional data collection methods.

    A proprietary software suite supports the new UAV workflows. Using Leica Infinity for point cloud, digital surface model and orthophoto generation enables surveyors to process and visualize aerial data, increasing productivity and speeding data delivery. Supporting users to share data to Cylcone and Cloudworx, the integration of the UAV point cloud with terrestrial scan data enables informed decisions, while complete data sets increase project efficiency.

    Use in construction

    Throughout a construction project lifecycle of planning, designing and construction, Aibot provides easy access to critical information to perform volume calculations and monitor site progress. From creating digital terrain models to stripping and bulk earthworks and trenching to finally fine grading, paving and compaction, the solution facilitates actuals comparisons. This provides a more transparent view of site progression monitoring and volume calculations with safer operations, to keep projects on schedule.

    High-definition imagery and 3D mapping enable viewing of site mapping or progress documentation, meaning users identify gaps early with high accuracy, and save time and money at all project stages.

    Automating operations

    The new technology, developed in partnership with UAV manufacturer DJI, allows users to process and analyze millions of data points gathered from above and to visualize the data for actionable information. UAV data can be combined with existing survey technologies, such as TPS, GPS and laser scanning, for a more complete set of information.

  • Leica smart antenna features tilt compensation, magnetic field resistance

    Leica Geosystems has introduced the Leica iCON gps 70 T smart antenna as part of its Leica iCON gps 70 series for reliable and easy stake-out jobs on any construction site.

    Measurement results become quicker and more accurate with the gps 70 T’s permanent tilt compensation, resistance to magnetic interferences and calibration-free usage.

    With the iCON gps 70 T, construction professionals can measure and stake out points without having to keep the pole vertical to level the bubble. According to the company, it allows the user to look at the immediate environment — for other people, machines, excavations, motor vehicles and structures — rather than on the bubble.

    The combination of the latest GNSS technology and inertial measurement unit (IMU) equips the gps 70 T with its true tilt compensation. The tilt compensation extends the measurement possibilities, improves quality and accuracy of the collected data, and reduces errors.

    The iCON gps 70 series is seamlessly integrated into the version 4.0 of the iCON field software. By keeping the core central interface, users will benefit from the simple-to-use workflows that require less training and avoid costly downtime.

  • Leica scanner reaches inaccessible with 1-km range

    Leica Geosystems has released the Leica ScanStation P50 as the newest member of its 3D terrestrial laser scanner P-Series.

    The new ScanStation P50 combines all the features of the P40 plus a longer range scanning capability of more than 1 kilometer. Increasing users’ flexibility to offer services in new markets, the rugged and versatile laser scanner enables professionals to 3D capture even at great distances with angular accuracy paired with low-range noise and survey-grade dual-axis compensation.

    Scanning the inaccessible. The ScanStation P50 opens new business opportunities for reality-capture professionals, helping them to scan what was previously unreachable such as big mine pits, long bridges, dams and skyscrapers, the company said.

    With its range, the P50 enables users to scan any tall or wide infrastructure or dangerous sites from a remote and safe position. The newest member of the P-Series provides the highest quality 3D data and high-dynamic range (HDR) imaging at an extremely fast scan rate of up to 1 mio points per second and ranges of more than 1 kilometer.

    “Our customers have requested increased range so that they can capture tall structures and/or far away features without sacrificing the safety of their field crews,” said Mike Harvey, Leica Geosystems NAFTA HDS product and applications manager. “During a recent deployment of the Leica P50 in an urban setting, the extended range allowed us to capture more of a city skyline in less setups. Due to the extended range, the additional data made scan registration very easy and much faster.”

  • Leica Geosystems debuts GNSS RTK rover at Intergeo 2017

    Leica Geosystems released its GS18 T GNSS RTK rover at Intergeo 2017, which took place Sept. 26-28 in Berlin, Germany. According to the company, this GNSS RTK rover saves users time because they no longer need to hold the pole vertical to level the bubble.

    In addition, the GS18 T RTK rover combines with the company’s Leica Captive and Infinity softwares, which allows the rover to record how the pole was leveled during the measurement and to store the values, the company said.

  • True tilt compensation GNSS presented by Leica

    Leica Geosystems has released the Leica GS18 T, a fast GNSS RTK rover, as well as the latest versions of Leica Captivate field software and Leica Infinity office software.

    Leica made the announcement at Intergeo 2017, held Sept. 26-28 in Berlin, Germany.

    The announcement expands the Leica Captivate Experience. With the addition of calibration-free GNSS and various upgrades to the Captivate field software and Infinity office software, users continue the immersive experience with self-learning GNSS and engaging, intuitive software interfaces.

    “In my business, speed is the name of the game,” said Manny Sangha, owner of Sangha Geomatics & Land Survey Inc. in Vanderhoof, Canada. ” With my GS16, I’ve been able to reduce time spent on every project. I can only see this getting faster and improving efficiency with the GS18. No longer having to level the pole nor calibrate the system, this is a real value for me and a game-changer in the industry.”

    Calibration-free tilt compensating GNSS

    According to Leica Geosystems, the GS18 T is the a calibration-free tilt compensating GNSS solution immune to magnetic disturbances.

    GNSS measurements can be taken from any position on site, saving users up to 20 percent of time in the field over conventional surveying practices, because they no longer need to hold the pole vertical to level the bubble.

    The GS18 T uses precise inertial measuring units (IMUs) and not a compass, so that users can measure with a tilted pole close to buildings, underneath cars and close to metallic objects.

    With integrated quality assurance, the GS18 T records exactly how the pole was leveled during the measurement. The GS18 T then stores the values, ensuring measurement traceability and complete quality reporting.

    Software updates

    Fully supporting the GS18 T, Leica Captivate v3.0 field software and Leica Infinity v2.4 office software now offer users a more immersive means of control on site and at the desk.

    Captivate now allows configuration of the GS18 T for all measuring and staking applications and the visualization of tilt compensated measurements. Measured data can be directly imported into Infinity or exported into a variety of formats suitable for CAD packages.

    Within Infinity, users can visualise the measured data, including the creation of reports providing full traceability and quality assurance for themselves and their clients.

    Leica Geosystems’ BLK360 is a miniaturized black 3D imaging laser scanner. The BLK360 captures the world with full-color panoramic images overlaid on a high-accuracy point cloud.

    The one-button Leica BLK360 is easy to use, Leica said. Anyone who can operate an iPad can now capture the world around them with high-resolution 3D panoramic images.

    The Leica BLK360 imaging laser scanner is so small and light that it fits in a typical messenger bag. It features a 60-meter measurement range for full dome scans. A complete full-dome laser scan, 3D panoramic image capture and transfer to the iPad Pro takes only 3 minutes.

    Using the ReCap Pro 360 mobile app, the BLK360 streams image and point cloud data to iPad. The app filters and registers scan data in real time. After capture, ReCap 360 Pro enables for point cloud data transfer to a number of computer-aided design, building information modeling, virtual reality and augmented reality applications. The integration of BLK360 and Autodesk software streamlines the reality-capture process, opening the technology to non-surveying individuals.

  • Utility post-processing software delivers CAD drawings

    Leica-DXutility-WLeica Geosystems has released its new DX Office Vision utility post processing software for mapping ground-penetrating radar (GPR) data from the field into a CAD drawing.

    DX Office Vision allows even non-experienced users to obtain professional 3D CAD drawings and visualize the detected underground utilities in a simple way, according to Leica. The intuitive interface enables users to filter, select, identify and make annotations of the located targets. With DX Office Vision, post-processing for all ground-penetrating data requires no add-on or third party software.

    “Following the demo of the new DX Office Vision I have to say I am impressed. The user interface is very intuitive with key processing views easily manipulated for fast interpretation of ground penetration radar data. I was particularly impressed with the DX Office Vision feature that allowed me to clean up the scan and highlight certain areas to give a clearer view of hyperbolae,” said Alex Rampton, surveyor at Plowman Craven.

    DX Office Vision was developed by utility surveyors who know what is needed from a post processing software. The software was created to reduce the post processing time and eliminate all unnecessary steps to convert data or chose parameters. The software guides the user to create a reliable 3D map of the underground detected utilities with minimal training.

    Leica Geosystems’ BLK360 miniaturized 3D imaging laser scanner is now available for reservation within Europe, for delivery in summer. The laser scanner simplifies the collection of as-built reality capture data for work in architecture, design, construction and engineering among other vertical markets.

    The Leica BLK360 is an easy-to-use and powerful reality-capture solution that enables professionals to capture 360-degree HDR spherical imagery within minutes. Users place the lightweight BLK360 on a level surface or tripod and, with the push of a button, it captures 360-degree HDR spherical imagery and takes a 360,000 point per second laser scan.

    The BLK360 features +-4 mm accuracy at 10 meters and an overall 0.6–60-meter range. Within three minutes, the spherical image and laser scan is completed and ready to view in the Autodesk ReCap Pro for mobile app, which runs on an iPad Pro. From there, users can take measurements, add markup and annotations or share onsite data with their colleagues back in the office.

  • Leica Zeno GG04 smart antenna increases access to GIS

    Leica Geosystems has introduced the Leica Zeno GG04 smart antenna, enabling a flexible solution to improve mobile devices’ GNSS accuracy with real-time kinematic (RTK) and precise point positioning (PPP).

    Paired with the Zeno GG04, any Zeno or third-party mobile device with Android or Windows OS can now collect highly precise positioning data with Leica Geosystems’ GNSS technology and 555-channel tracking performance. With PPP, users can collect data in areas without cellular coverage. The bring-your-own-device (BYOD) functionality enables any smart device to collect survey-grade data, delivering centimeter results.

    “We’re excited to hear about the new Zeno Connect for Android. Being able to connect any Android device to the new GG04 antenna and use it for field data capture is a real game-changer,” said Zenny Chareas, project manager at PeopleGIS, a firm that builds web-based database applications for field collection currently using the Leica Zeno GG03. “Our clients have been eagerly anticipating this type of functionality, and it’s pretty cool that we now have a solution for them.”

    Geographic information system (GIS) provider Esri has partnered with Swiss-based spatial measurement instrument manufacturer Leica Geosystems to encourage innovation of mobile field data collection in government by offering grants totaling $143,250 in goods and services.

    Projects should combine GIS and GPS.

    Known as the Smart Communities Innovation Challenge, 10 governments that submit detailed project proposals demonstrating increased efficiencies in collecting data for decision support or improved productivity in delivering governmental services will be selected to receive a grant.

    Project proposals will be accepted from Aug. 15, 2016, until the official submission deadline at 5 p.m. (Pacific daylight time) on Oct. 14, 2016. Grant recipients will be announced on Oct. 31.

    Priority will be given to projects that tie GIS and GPS to daily workloads, influence sharing of geographically enabled data across multiple jurisdictions or interdepartmental ventures, and clearly convey a perceived benefit or return on investment.

    The intent of the joint program is to supply governments with the tools to succeed as they implement progressive methods to streamline workflows. By providing technology, training, and technical support grants, Esri and Leica aim to inspire legislative bodies to devise transformational approaches to improving the efficiency of mobile fieldworkers.

    As innovative ideas from the government community are brought forward for solving real-world problems, the best applications will be those of universal appeal and the ability to be shared between governments through an open exchange hub.

    The challenge’s grant winners will be thought-leading governments that have plans in place to jump-start projects such as facility inspections, emergency reporting, asset inventory, environmental management and monitoring, efficient employee routing, code enforcement, population and housing enumeration, mosquito abatement and/or sign inventory.
