    Topcon offers free GNSS correction services to aid California wildfire recovery

    In response to the recent wildfires in Southern California, Topcon Positioning Systems is now offering free access to its GNSS correction services network for emergency recovery efforts. The company is offering a 90-day subscription to its Topnet Live service, which delivers precise positioning data crucial for assessing damaged infrastructure, surveying, utility mapping and operating construction equipment.

    The technology is being made available at no cost within affected areas to support first responders, public works teams, and other professionals involved in damage assessment, infrastructure repairs, and rebuilding initiatives. The service is compatible with any brand of receiver capable of using RTCM format NTRIP corrections.

    “We want to help the efforts that are ongoing and aid in the future reconstruction of the damaged communities from these wildfires,” said Jason Killpack, director of Topcon emerging business development. “The 90-day emergency subscription service is free to anybody that needs them to get their essential job done.”

    u-blox and Topcon Positioning Systems have formed a strategic partnership to develop a high-precision GNSS positioning service for the mass market.

    The partnership was formed in response to the increasing demand for GNSS precise positioning across various applications. According to a recent EUSPA report, services enabled by GNSS devices are projected to generate approximately 80% of total GNSS revenues by 2033.

    The comprehensive GNSS correction services will serve a wide range of applications requiring precise positioning, including automotive, industrial, robotics, construction, precision agriculture and mobility sectors. These services will integrate with u-blox’s current and future hardware products, as well as existing services such as PointPerfect.

    The Over the Horizon (OHA) automatic identification system (AIS) is the newest update to the savvy navvy app. The update uses a phone’s internet connection to stream other vessels’ locations in real-time directly to the app to improve safety on the water.

    Traditional AIS received from the transceiver on the boat has a range of a few miles, whereas OHA is designed to show vessels further afield. While OHA does require an internet connection, users do not need additional hardware to see information on vessel movements.

    OHA AIS allows users to see vessels directly on the chart with small and large vessel crafts defined by different colors. Users can also check how crowded an anchorage might be — either from onboard or while planning routes at home.

    The savvy navvy application highlights when no position has been received for more than 30 seconds, which marks the positional variance area around each vessel and allows users to be extra vigilant when navigating.

    Topcon Positioning Systems has entered a strategic partnership with Bentley Systems and Worldsensing to integrate Topcon’s GNSS technology into the companies’ software and connectivity solutions to improve geospatial data accuracy and operational efficiency.

    Under the agreement, Topcon’s web-based GNSS processing engine will be incorporated into Bentley’s iTwin internet-of-things (IoT) monitoring solutions, offering users real-time geospatial intelligence for better decision-making and operational effectiveness. According to Steve Bentley, senior director of infrastructure IoT at Bentley Systems, the system is designed to advance the capabilities of infrastructure digital twins.

    It is a connect-and-collect solution that allows for real-time detection and analysis of potential risks. GNSS technology is the core component, which aims to make ground-movement monitoring applications more cost-effective and efficient while reducing the initial investment required for GNSS monitoring.

    It is available for commercial use in the United States, Canada, Australia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. According to Bentley Systems, the solution will expand its reach to South and Latin America.

    Topcon Positioning Systems has launched MC-Max asphalt paving and MC-Max milling solutions. The systems offer modularity, simplified configurations and advanced feature sets to increase productivity in asphalt paving and cold milling applications. 

    The MC-Max Asphalt Paving and MC-Max Milling systems, which are made up of GNSS receivers, total stations, displays and other high-precision sensors, are built with the new MC-X machine control platform. Users can choose from entry-level 2D systems that follow a reference, such as a string or a curb, or automated solutions that track a paver or miller in 3D. 

    Contractors can pave and mill at variable depths while meeting smoothness standards mandated by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) mandated smoothness standards. The solutions also include MC-X licensing options. The technology is compatible with OEM CAN-based systems and has expanded to include compatibility with additional aftermarket systems, according to Topcon. 

    It is equipped with Virtual Ski intelligence software designed to simplify workflows in specific resurfacing applications, such as rural roads where there are fewer fixed points or intersections to match up to. 

    “Our mobile road scanner easily creates a 3D model of the existing road surface, which can be sent to the machine using our Sitelink3D cloud solution,” said Murray Lodge, executive vice president, Topcon. “Simply scan and mill or lay the base layer and let the milling machine or the paver do the surface design job instead of all that data having to go back to the office for the design work. This results in the production of a smooth surface more quickly with less effort and significant time savings. Thanks to the flexible, digital calculation, which follows the road direction even in tight curves, the overall quality and lifespan of the resurfaced road is improved.” 

    The company also released the RD-MC road construction machine control solution, which can be utilized in areas without satellite reception by using a local positioning system (LPS) solution to offer precise positioning when working in challenging GNSS coverage areas.

    Topcon Positioning Systems has expanded its support for the Get Kids into Survey (GKiS) project, now serving as the exclusive sponsor of the Global Brand Ambassador Hub. This new platform will offer a comprehensive range of resources to the project’s Brand Ambassadors, a worldwide community of volunteers who visit schools to advocate for surveying as a career and introduce students to the surveying and geospatial industries.

    Get Kids into Survey originated in 2017 and was initiated by cofounder Elaine Ball through the creation of a poster that surveyors could use to explain the profession to children. Since its inception, the project has continued to highlight the work of surveyors for young audiences, backed by an industry keenly aware of the necessity to attract the next generation of surveyors.

    The Hub will allow GKiS to develop and host resources for the global network of ambassadors and aims to increase participation in career fairs, workshops and educational activities across more than 30 countries.

    By sponsoring a homework project with GKiS, Topcon will also have its own unique GKiS cartoon character, Yumi the Wildcat Survey Ninja. Yumi will be the face of the Topcon brand to young aspiring surveyors and be given her own Character Spotlight on the GKiS blog.

    Research conducted by Topcon has shown that nearly a third of construction managers throughout Europe have identified skill shortages as a major challenge in their projects.
    According to Topcon, this shortage stems from a combination of experienced employees leaving the industry and a lack of recruits. Programs such as GKiS represent just one example of the outreach and educational initiatives designed to address and reverse this trend.

    Topcon’s Topnet Live is a real-time GNSS corrections service that delivers high-quality centimeter-level real-time kinematic (RTK) corrections data with a broad worldwide network coverage and a variety of subscription options.

    Topcon Positioning Systems has made an investment in DDK Positioning, a UK-based GNSS receiver and precise point positioning correction services company. DDK Positioning delivers services over the Iridium network to provide global precision positioning services that can augment GNSS constellations enhancing accuracy for critical industrial applications.

    “With the expansion and growing success of this business, specifically in the marine sector, a closer cooperation will ensure optimal integration for the highest possible accuracies and performance in the most demanding applications,” Ian Stilgoe, vice president of Emerging Business at Topcon, said.

    The global smart agriculture market size was valued at $16,747.7 million in 2019 and is estimated to reach $29,234.6 million by 2027, with a CAGR of 9.7% from 2021 to 2027, according to Valuates Reports.

    The market is expected to rise as a result of rising population, increasing strain on the food supply system, the growing use of new technology in agricultural products and farmers’ growing focus on tracking livestock.

    According to the report, the global competition between players will be increased by new players joining the global smart agriculture market, which will in turn increase advancements in technology. Top companies in the smart agriculture market include Trimble, Deere & Co., Topcon Positioning Systems, DeLaval, AgEagle Aerial Systems, Afimilk, Raven Industries, Ag Junction, AGCO Corporation and GEA Group, the report said.

    Current trends influencing smart agriculture market size include the growing adoption of automation and control systems, such as GPS/GNSS receivers, irrigation controllers, and guidance and steering systems, has created a new approach to farming practices.     Despite this, the precision farming segment held the largest market share in 2019 and is expected to retain its dominance during the forecast period, the report said.     The most often cited reason for a company’s reluctance to move toward a GNSS-based capital equipment purchase is cost. Not so for the Redland Company, which embraced GNSS long ago and employs it in almost every facet of its operation.

    On a unique 475-acre Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) project, Redland used millimeter-grade GNSS on a Gomaco 9500 trimmer to final grade a 2.25-mile oval track, saving months over traditional string line grading. For Redland, the solution has gone from a necessary expense to an entirely new profit center.

    The FDOT SunTrax project includes construction of a proving ground for autonomous vehicles. When complete, the 200+-acre center will offer a test chamber to simulate weather, an area where pick-ups and drop-offs can be replicated, and a precision-graded 2.25-mile oval test track.

    The oval is designed to replicate turnpike travel at 70 mph. “Because FDOT had some very strict tolerances on the track surface itself, the grade had to be extremely precise,” said Walt Thomas, Redland’s division superintendent for grading/trimming operations. “So when we got out here, all the rough grading had been completed and we were brought in to prepare it for the asphalt course.”

    For ultra-fine grading, Redland uses a trimmer/placer that offers advantages over a motor grader, including an ability to resist “floating” over higher density material or cutting into lower density material. To maintain grade, trimmers typically are used in conjunction with a string line which, while effective and accurate, is also labor-intensive, time-consuming and challenging.

    Because of the project’s size, Redland has used Millimeter GPS from Topcon Positioning Systems on its Gomaco 9500 for more than two years. “We have gotten tremendous results with it,” Thomas said. “We knew that, for here, it was the only viable trimming approach.”

    Redland’s Millimeter GPS uses a series of tripod-mounted Topcon LZ-T5 laser transmitters placed at an established reference point to generate a 33-foot-high Laser Zone signal. That signal is accessed by the receiver on the trimmer and used to determine elevation, set the necessary depth of the trimmerhead, and maintain the required tolerances.

    While most of the project only needed two lasers, four were used for the curved sections of the oval track, including a turnaround loop for testing larger autonomous vehicles like semi-trailers. “Trimming anywhere from 1 to 2 inches of material, we were averaging rates of about 800 square yards per day — and the accuracies have consistently been dead on,” Thomas said.
    The machine running the millimeter-grade system is in steady demand by many of the area’s premier grading contractors in Florida and North Carolina. “For us, it has paid nice dividends,” Thomas said.

    Topcon equipment that Redland Company used for the SunTrax construction included the 3D millimeter system, the Topcon HiPerV base and rover, laser units and FC-5000 controllers, purchased through Lengemann Corporation in Altoona.

    For Redland, Topcon GNSS solutions “have been great for our own operation and a powerful solution to offer as a subcontractor,” Thomas said. “We are getting to a point here in Florida where having a 3D capability is almost a prerequisite for bidding many jobs. No problem, we are already there.”

    The SunTrax facility is being jointly developed by Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise (FTE), Florida Polytechnic University and industry partners. The cutting-edge facility, which will offer unique opportunities for testing emerging transportation technologies in safe and controlled environments, is being touted as the only high-speed autonomous vehicle testing facility in the southeastern U.S.

    SunTrax is slated to open this year.

  • Bentley Systems, Topcon launch Digital Construction Works venture

    Bentley Systems and Topcon Positioning Systems have announced their new, jointly owned company — Digital Construction Works  — is open for business.

    Bentley is a global provider of comprehensive software and digital twin cloud services for advancing the design, construction, and operations of infrastructure, and Topcon is a leader in positioning technology for the survey and construction industries.

    The companies made the announcement at The Year in Infrastructure Conference, held Oct. 21 in Singapore.

    Digital Construction Works has a global staff of digital construction experts and provides digital automation, integration and “twinning” services around a portfolio of fit-for-purpose software and cloud services from Topcon, Bentley, and other software vendors. The venture was created to realize the “breakthrough potential of constructioneering” for industrializing construction, according to a press release.

    Bentley Systems and Topcon joined forces in 2016 to jointly develop enhanced integration between their respective MAGNET and ProjectWise cloud services so that engineering and construction workflows could be integrated for improved project quality and performance.

    Since then, Bentley and Topcon have continuously introduced innovations in surveying, reality modeling, scheduling and logistics, work packaging, machine control, and progressive assurance for construction.

    In 2017, they opened Constructioneering Academies, including at Topcon’s “sandbox” facilities, for construction professionals to experience new digital best practices, first-hand. During 2018, the companies assimilated Bentley’s SYNCHRO and Topcon’s ClearEdge3D acquisitions into constructioneering offerings.

    Digital Construction Works is chartered to embed its experts within constructors’ major project teams to advance and optimize constructioneering processes for delivering better design-build outcomes.

    Through its digital integration services, to connect and automate constructors’ existing processes with constructioneering, Digital Construction Works can make the best projects better while also helping to institutionalize these digital workflows throughout a constructor’s full project portfolio, the companies said.

    At the same time, experiences gained by Digital Construction Works will help guide Bentley Systems and Topcon in prioritizing their constructioneering software development investments.
